The R-Pattz Facttz

We’re doing a show about Robert Pattinson, who some of you may remember from the film Twilight. It’s on at the Hidden Door Festival - tickets here - and features some excellent guests: 

Emily Elver, Harry Giles, Colin McGuire, Iona Lee, Freddie Alexander, Ross McCleary, Roddy Shippin, Marianne MacRae and Super Inuit.

The point of reading books and watching movies are to allow ourselves to be in an entirely different world than ours, filled with characters who are relatable, yet somehow different than the people we know in real life. We care about these characters because we can see ourselves or someone we know in them, but at the same time these characters have to be special and different for us to care enough about them. We want to learn their story. We want to save them. We want them to end up happy. Because if they do not end up happy in a made-up  world, a made-up story, when will things ever end up happy in our world? In our story? Many stories out there are alike, and it takes a lot for a movie or a book to stand out. To be different, though familiar. 

"Remember me"  (yes, I'm talking about the movie with R-patz) is different, but somehow it did not satisfy me. The character which R-patz portrays (Tyler) is basically a great character, and he has a lot of potential. But somehow I didn't feel like I got to know him. I felt like the movie was so long, but at the end I didn't feel like it had ended, because I didn't really feel like I knew Tyler that well, therefore his death didn't make me too sad. I actually think R-patz did a decent job. He moved on from Twilight, and his acting was actually okay. What annoyed me a lot was the filming. I felt like his face was never really filmed from an angle where I could see the emotions I'm sure he put into the character of Tyler Hawkins. 

Then there's Emilie De Ravin who portrays the character Ally. Now, I like Emilie De Ravin a lot, but to me it seemed like at some points she was trying to speak American (She's Aussie) more than actually acting, like she was focusing more on the language rather than acting the emotions out.. Maybe that's just me. It just annoyed me a lot. Ally and Tyler are both really important characters and they both have a great deal of potential to make the story extremely interesting, given their backgrounds. Trouble is, we don't really get to know Ally and Tyler all that well.. They dialogue in the movie was just really fucking sad. I wish they would've focused more on the dialogue rather than the crappy filming from weird angles.. 

Then there's the little sister Caroline played by Ruby Jerins (whom I don't know). I actually think she did a hell of job, but the ending with Caroline and the father Charles was really crap to me. 

I loved that Tyler wrote to Michael in his book almost every day. I loved the story of Michael, but it annoyed me that we only found out in the ending of the movie that it had actually been about 6 years since Michael died.. 

I didn't see it coming that Tyler would die too. Why not?  Because the handwriting in the classroom- the moment when Caroline's teacher writes "September 11, 2001" on the blackboard- sucked. I actually thought it said zoo1 instead of 2001. Maybe I'm just stupid but I was bored as hell during the last part of the movie, and I genuinely thought there would be some sort of trip to the zoo for the class, and I was actually thinking "That's sad for Caroline, because she won't be enjoying herself on that trip".  And then Tyler died. And it was not until the very last seconds of the movie that I realised that Tyler died because of the terroist attack on the twin towers on September 11, 2001. That sucked. To begin with, I thought Tyler had killed himself like Michael..  Maybe that's just me, but it pissed me off. 

Also what the hell is up with the scene where Ally's dad hits her? Like what the hell?  He is a policeman, I know he was upset, but it was just.. Crap really. I got the part where he beats up Tyler, but when he also hit his own daughter it just made me think he was a really, really bad person, and I don't think he was meant to be all that bad.

Wow.. I just really needed to get that out of my system. I hate it when movies have great potential and the producers just mess it up. I do not like that at all. I was looking forward to finally watching this movie, but omg, what a mess!
