Strangers Again
Roman Godfrey x Reader
Summary: There comes a time when we say goodbye to the ones we love for the last time, only to become strangers to each other. Like we were when we first met.
A/N: I’ve come to the conclusion that angst is my only mood??? Oops.
Warnings: none
Request: Can I request something with Roman and he’s been watching the reader for a while but they assume it’s because they are always with their “prettier” friend and they misunderstand Roman flirting with them for looking for their friend or something if that makes sense (This is nothing like the prompt because I got carried away when I was in a mood.)
~
He was gonna choose her. They both were. You could see it in their eyes the first minute you met her, they were infatuated with her. You regretted telling Roman it was okay for her to stay, she stole him and Peter away from you the minute she first laid eyes on them. You thought it was just a fluke, that she was just another girl for him. That you and your nights with Roman meant anything to him. You’d known each other long enough to know he was the only man you’d ever love. It was easy to accept that he might not ever love you the way you love him at first. But after years of waiting, it was getting harder to wait.
After Leda, Peter, and Nadia, it all became too much for him. He had come to you so much for comfort, for a while, the only place he could sleep was in your arms. You were his heart, and he was your home. So you thought. The house that you and Roman had built together was invaded. So much so even Olivia felt for you.
Miranda showed up at your door, and you two took her in like a little bird who needed her wings fixed. At first, you noticed nothing, Roman would still be in your arms at night, telling you his secrets like a diary. Then she found Nadia, that’s when he walked away from you. Your bed was cold when he moved back to his master bedroom. Your sheets were empty, and your pillows stopped smelling like him.
Which led you to now, your bags were packed, boxes in your car, and pictures in the trash. It would be impossible to stay. To watch first hand your love slip away from you would be self-inflicted torture you just didn’t deserve. It was becoming exhausting to be Roman’s conscious. To be his North Star when he was the one who made the sky dark.
You walked into the cave and opened up the door for the last time. To see the little person you saved. The day she was born, you whisked her away to a safe haven. You were the one who stayed with her all night when she cried when she smiled, and when she slept. Now she only knew Miranda as a mother. Even if it wasn’t the title you wanted, it would be a disastrous lie to say you felt nothing for her. If that was what she wanted, then that’s what she deserved, that’s what Roman deserved. Putting her down was hard, closing the door was harder. Tears left your cheeks as you took one last tour of the home you built.
“Where are you going? Where are your things?”
“I’m leaving, I just- I can’t do this anymore, I’m sorry.” You wiped your eyes, not wanting to cause more dramatics. “You don’t need me anymore, Godfrey, and I don’t need you anymore.” He set down his things and scoffed.
“You don’t need me anymore? Who’s going to pay for your things, your clothes, the roof over your head and the food you eat? In fact, who paid for your things in your bags? Those bags that I paid for. You have nothing without me!” Cruelty became his default Attitude when he was about to lose it.
“You’re right. I have nothing, but I have me, and that’s all I need.” You brought your bags back over to Roman, leaving them for him. A fresh start was needed anyways.
“Just remember what you’re losing. Who was there for you when Leda died? When Peter left? When Olivia turned you into a monster? Who’s family gave you a refuge from Olivia,” more tears sprung from your eyes after the return to memory lane. “All you do is take, you’re not powerful you’re a coward. A coward who hides behind his mommy issues and money. I’m done.”
When he finally came to terms with what was about to happen, all the blood drained from his cheeks. All the memories of you and him we’re flooding his mind. Like the time he kissed you when your date stood you up. He loved the way you melted into his arms. He loved the way you and your family gave him unconditional love when his own family let you down. Or the time he found you comforting Shelly in the girl's bathroom when the mean girls trapped her in a stall. Everything he loves in the world was because of you and because of Shelly. You taught him to love his child no matter the circumstances. You convinced him to makeup with Peter despite it being the last thing he wanted to do.
“Please don’t go… You can’t leave me,” His voice was small, full of fear of a life without you. “I-I’m sorry I took advantage of you. It won’t happen again please just don’t leave me. I put Peter, Leda everyone before you, I shouldn’t have done that.”
“I can’t. I’ve been waiting for you to come around long before anyone came into the picture. They’re not the problem, we are. We grew apart.. it happens,” Your lip quivered in failed attempt to keep your composure in check.
In a move that maybe you shouldn’t have done, you went to him and wrapped your arms around his waist. His tall frame clinging onto the memory of you and him. His chest shook against your cheek, his heartbeat gradually rising in your ear. You’d miss him, you loved him you could never deny that. Walking away was the best thing to do.
“I’m so sorry I couldn’t love you like you deserve… But it’s not because of her. I’m just a broken monster” He whispered against your head. Both of you let out a couple of sobs as you just held each other and grieved for the relationship you never had.
“I’m sorry too, Goodbye, Roman,” you reached up and kissed his cheek. “Don’t let Olivia win… Love you forever.”
You stepped away from him and grabbed your things, not looking at Roman. His feet had tumbled him into the couch where he collapsed onto his own feelings. It doesn’t hurt as much as he thinks it does. Pain doesn’t last forever, and you two were never meant to be together.
Walking out of the house gave you a sense of relief. There was no more worrying about who you’d see in the house, what you would hear or what you would see at 3 am. No more anxiety, no more tears, no more regrets, and it felt so good. The present was changing, and you couldn’t live in the past any longer.
Midnight conversation in the 18th century.
Pian (on the right) was freed for a century. He told himself that it was a miracle, a benediction, but he knew that the universe would have punished him again if he didn’t play by the rules. So, logically, R.g. (aka Lord Heaven, aka his best friend) was more than happy to host him.

Just discovered that John Green is a Virgo, and that his birthday is August 24! 🤣
Don't know why, but I find John Green a bit graceless.
(There's 3 August 24s that I like, and none are him! 🤣)
