they really capture the essence of remembrance in such a bittersweet and heart wrenching way and i just love reverse 1999 so much

The thing with Charon is that i think he's Paul, but he is also not.

Charon is an awakened from the concept/fear of war and death, and he "took residence" in a dead soldier's body, a not living "object". But even so he seems to be affected by the "body's" memories, at certain point even feelings, at some point recalling the past with a friend from such time...? Is that not, at certain degree, Paul's consciousness?

I do think he is still Paul, but not the same one before he died. After Charon's awakening Paul has still died, not just as his body but also who he was before. He still experienced terrors of war before death, he still died. And now "Paul" awoke from such feelings of many others. He couldn't just be the same person he was before death, after all of that. Old Paul is dead, even if who once was him goes on to exist.
