Let’s talk about the most obvious aspect that sets tennis apart from other sports --the court surface. No other sport is played on so many different materials, and these materials dictate the game more than we’re aware of.

The actual boss: PHYSICS
There are two ways to examine grass, cement/hard, and clay surfaces: (1) bounce/surface elasticity (coefficient of restitution), and (2) skid (coefficient of friction).
The ball bounces the highest on clay because the materials are compact af (high restitution). Little energy is lost upon the ball’s impact on surface. Meanwhile the ball bounces the lowest on grass because the soil acts as a cushion (low restitution), dissipating a high percentage of the ball’s energy. A ball’s bounce on hard court is somewhere between the two.
Now let’s talk friction. Ball is slow on clay because the surface acts as a sandpaper that grabs on the ball’s fuzz. On the other hand, grass is sleek af, so the ball literally just skids across the grass blades like a smooth mofo. Lastly, hard courts are in between.
What does this mean for a playah?
Friction influences the speed of the ball, and elasticity/bounciness influences the angle of the ball. A 120mph serve on grass will come off the bounce about 8mph faster than a 120mph serve on clay thanks to lower friction, and about 7 degrees lower than clay because of lower restitution. Now add up all of these shit together with the unevenness of the surface. The player’s reaction should be fast and fucking furious at Wimby, and warrior mode at French Open.
But what about my fave, the hard court?
What makes hard court special is heat retention. Now you know why your bae is sweaty af during hard court season.
