Between One way or another and @sun-daisies Rabbit hearted girl, sketching Ronance on Robin's roof was a matter of time
Inspired by the end of Rabbit hearted girl because scarred Robin is important to me
10 details about the lion hearted girl flayed!robin au since we are 2 (technically) chapters of hatchet away from it
fic title is you want blood and i promised. i've cycled through about six different titles since starting, but this one stuck. don't get me started on the 8 million different meanings the title has depending on how you read it
it will be told from robin, steve, AND nancy’s pov, usually splitting two characters per chapter once they diverge into their separate storylines. there is also one (1) bonus joyce pov chapter planned
it is divided into three sections - before, during, and after being flayed - with each section getting its own atmospheric interlude to introduce it/set the tone
the first five chapters make up part one. their titles (and pov characters) are as follows: - mycelia - (robin) my body's made of crushed little stars (robin) if this is a prison, i’m willing to burn my own chain (robin) shy little rabbit, teething on a shotgun (steve, robin) give my body to satan if i could only keep my soul (nancy, robin)
the fic opens with a missing scene from rabbit hearted girl, detailing that vague period of time between robin leaving will in castle byers and will getting taken by the demogorgon
chapter 2 is a small collection of vignettes from robin's pov, filling in some gaps left in i forget to worry and i buried a hatchet. starting with the aftermath of the steelworks scene in i forget to worry and ending with where robin went after hatchet chapter 5 (because you're not finding out in hatchet), with some theater trio (robin, heather, and sam - but mainly robin and heather) and robin and billy sprinkled in between
what is currently chapter 17 (the fire's found a home in me) is the ultimate payoff to everything in the series thus far (it's like a reward lol)
i know everyone hates melissa buckley, but there are some STRONG parallels between her backstory and robin's story beats. (the cherry on top is robin, in melissa's introduction scene all the way back in rhg, saying something like “at least she won't be as stupid as her mother was.” we love a self fulfilling prophecy)
no russians. the american government is scary enough.
you want blood and i promised is the only fic in the series that is being written completely from scratch. while this fic was an idea back when i was first developing the series a few years ago, nothing had been written yet, unlike rabbit hearted girl, which was about 50% complete before i abandoned it, and i forget to worry and i buried a hatchet, which both had multiple scenes and rough outlines written (though both fics have completely spiraled into much larger projects than originally anticipated)
tag wrangling for the ronance fic and crafted possibly my favorite string of tags ever
you want blood and i promised
Robin tries not to let it consume her.
She tries to let it go.
But her dreams are filled with swirling smoke, a cocoon tightening around her until she’s suffocating, until her lungs are soot black and frozen. And she wakes every night gasping for breath and soaked in sweat, clinging to Steve like he’s the only anchor to reality. And she swears - she swears - that there are shadows stalking her, always lurking in the corners, just outside her vision.
For weeks after the steelworks incident, Robin tries desperately to stop thinking about it. If she pretends she’s fine, then she’s fine, right? If she squeezes her eyes shut and counts the spaces between her breaths and runs through all of the grounding statements she and Steve practiced, eventually she’ll be okay again.
She drifts through the days, untethered, floating far above herself like the sky is trying to reclaim her, like the night remembers that the atoms making up her body were forged in the violent explosions of ancient stars thousands of years ago. Like the stardust she’d been loaned is overdue at the library of space, like she’s been on borrowed time since she’d been born.
Steve knows something’s up. He keeps catching her zoning out, lost in her mental spiral of there is black dust in the steel mill there are remnants inside me it will come back and you will hurt everyone you love and there is nothing, nothing you can do about it. He notices every time it takes her a moment too long to respond, every time she cuts her food up into smaller pieces without ever raising her fork to her mouth, every time she digs her nails into her skin to try and stop it from eating her alive.
Is her blood black like-
She squeezes ice in white knuckled fists, and she thinks it’s almost as cold as the remnants inside of her. Sometimes she feels phantom claws digging into her heart. Her body remembers it, remembers the feeling of all the cold settling deep in the marrows of her bones.
Her body remembers - and it craves - the feeling of bleeding out. Draining her life out into cold dirt. Making room for something else to inhabit her earthly vessel.
She is just dust.
I am not dust. And I am not on an island.
If only she could believe it.
part 4 of lion hearted girl - the season 3 flayed!robin au (read here on ao3!)
things i am nervous about for flayed!robin:
it is so. fucking. heavy. everything i write tends to be dark and angsty but BOY. this ones a downer
the content of it specifically - the billy hargrove of it all. i've been very intentional in the foreshadowing throughout i forget to worry bc i don't want it to be a surprise. no plot twists. where you think we're going is exactly where we're going and i want you to abandon ship before we get there if you need to
^ handling said content with sensitivity and empathy and not having it become a spectacle/sensationalized. survivor focused and not victimization
the fact that there is so much "filler" content between rabbit hearted girl and flayed!robin (it WILL all pay off. it's building on itself. i promise promise promise just keep holding my hand and walking with me)
literally just the irl timeline of it all? by the time i get to flayed!robin it'll be like mid-to-late spring and my work is VERY seasonal - right now i get to write a lot because i'm in slow season and only working my safety job but by the time i hit flayed!robin time i'll be working like 50-70 hours a week between both jobs from may until literally november/december and that's not an exaggeration (although i did manage to write a LOT last busy season. i write to process feelings and as someone who lives in the us i have... a lot... of big feelings lately)
things i am excited about for flayed!robin:
every single setup and payoff (there's SO much)
the dust metaphor that i am really milking for all it's worth
literally just the mechanics of the hive mind and being flayed? i'm kinda just playing fast and loose with it all but it's been SO much fun
the chapter 3.5 interlude ouuuughhh
the flaying of heather holloway, actually. i'm stoked for that entire chapter
also what is currently chapter 11 ajghsjaghjdg i am SO excited for that one
feral nancy wheeler
the stobin of it all
if i can pull it off it will 100% be the fic i am the most proud of (although rabbit hearted girl will always be my soul fic)
and for a moment, i forget to worry
“You ever feel like dust?” There’s things like that, too. “Dust?” Steve echoes back. Robin nods. “Dust. Like you’re just- I don’t know. Like a ghost, or something. Like someone could come by and all they’d have to do is, like, sigh or something. Like one small gust of wind and you’re just- poof. Gone. Without a trace.” There’s an ache in his chest. The way she says it so nonchalantly. Like it’s just a musing, just some silly little thought she’d had. Like it didn’t already happen to her once before. Like it’s not something he knows she’s seriously considering. “You’re not dust,” he tells her. “You’re… dirt.” “Dirt?” Her laugh sounds surprised. “You’re reliable. Solid. Steady,” he explains. “You hold things together. You grow things. You leave things behind - like dirt under fingernails.” Robin snorts. “Only you could tell someone that they’re like dirt under fingernails and make it sound not entirely insulting.” “Yeah, well.” Steve squeezes her hand. “You’re dirt. You stay.”

gotta be so real with y'all i finished ywb chapter 3 at the pace of like. a single line per day (it also spiraled into a 9.7k chapter i fear)
anyways the very last bit of this chapter might be some of my fav prose i've ever written so i mean. there's that at least
