UNKLE: RABBIT IN YOUR HEADLIGHTS (1998)

Filmed in a London tunnel, this iconic video is explained by director Jonathan Glazer thus: “In a way this video is like an equation. Dennis Lavant is walking through a tunnel in one direction, but his reflection in the rearview mirrors of the cars make it look like he’s walking in the opposite direction. Every time he comes close to solving the equation in his head, a car knocks him down. And every time he’s knocked down he gets stronger, even though he looks more and more like he’s dead. In the end the car that hits him explodes, while nothing happens to him. So maybe he’s solved the equation.”

This was one of the acts I had the pleasure to work with for Germany. I so remember, when we first saw this video and than tried to pitch it to German music TV VIVA or MTV. At least we got a night rotation. At this time the budget for a video must have been minimum 100.000,- DM to be considered for the day program. But this video broke all rules, too long, to scary, to much not pop etc... Even that Thom Yorke was the singer and the main actor was the guy who played the main character at Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (Die Liebenden von Pont-Neuf) let it become only a night “rotation” -->  Hail to the internet!
