In early February 2017, I participated in the Rock N' Roll Marathon Remix Challenge for New Orleans. The Remix Challenge consisted of the 5K on Saturday, February 4th and either the half or full marathon of Sunday the 5th. After the race, I returned home with three medals: 5K, Marathon and Remix Challenge.
When I got back to my shop, I wanted to create a unique Artisan Frame for my three retro medals. The frame I decided to go with was a combination of three different mouldings nested together. Along the way, I also added an inner mat border that I seated in the inner moulding about 1/4" above the mat with the medals. When completed, the frame looks very contemporary with hints of retro and will blend well with most modern decor.

Race Framers now has two ways to create a display from an event medal, a traditional EZ-Medal Frame and the New Artisan Frame. A traditional frame is elegant, flexible and relatively straightforward to make. All the windows for the event memorabilia are rectangular, and they can accommodate varying sizes of medals, bibs, and pictures. There is an event information plate detailing the items in the display that is fully customizable, and the frame can typically be completed in 1 - 3 days.
Artisan Frames are designed to go with home decor and are a museum quality work of art. There is significantly more detail in designing the windows, undermatting, and frames. Frame mouldings are created by nesting and joining several high-end wood mouldings to create a display with multiple depths and dimensions. In addition to rectangular windows, Artisan Frames include circular and custom shapes. These frames typically take 1 - 3 weeks to complete and often times require the event memorabilia to be mailed to our shop.
In 2016 I participated in the Asheville Spartan Super and was very excited to run the kid's obstacle course with my five-year-old daughter. I also wanted to create a truly unique piece of art out of her ribbon and medal that she can take with here when she leaves the nest. In my mind, the frame had to be a true work of craftsmanship if I thought she would hang it in her place. To create the frame, I found two pieces of moulding, an inner one and an outer float frame. Float frames are very popular with canvas art and feature a thin outer edge and wide thin bottom. The inner frame has a weathered metal/wood appearance that I felt goes well with ancient Spartan gear. I also wanted to create depth to the frame similar to objects you might see displayed in a museum. The acrylic window and an outer black mat border were set in the middle frame moulding about 1/2" higher than the back matting. Two precisely cut windows in the back matting hold the medal and ribbon and were set in the back of the frame even with the float frame. When the frame was completed, it formed a professional and artistic piece that will go with almost any home decor.
