Rachel Barton Pine's Music by Black Composers initiative aims to highlight works by composers who may have been overlooked by history.
At Brooklyn's Ryder Elementary School, students in the Harmony Program got a front row seat to world-class violinist Rachel Barton Pine. She plays music you may have never heard, by composers like Ignatius Sancho, a self taught British composer, and Chevalier de Saint-Georges, who was once the envy of Mozart.
Novembers Doom - What Could Have Been
Everybody loves Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. Classic. Can't go wrong. For whatever reason, there's way less love for Pibroch, a violin fantasy by Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie, actual Scottish dude. I think of the two, this piece pays better tribute to Scotland's traditional music.
Here featuring Rachel Barton Pine, who also deserves more love.
I have a ticket for tonight to hear violinist Rachel Barton Pine with Gilles Vonsattel as her piano accompanist, but I think I'm going to skip the recital. I have 3 hours of work that I'm supposed to get done between now and midnight, and the program is an all-Brahms recital, and I'm just not a Brahms girlie. I've never heard Barton Pine in person before, so I hope she comes back but has a more interesting recital program.
