Top 15 Books of 2015
In no particular order:
Paradox Series by Rachel Bach-This was one of the Vaginal Fantasy picks this year and I absolutely loved it. Its a space opera (has a very Alien feel to it) with a strong kick butt female lead and a good storyline. We were only reading the first book for the group but I dived into the remaining books straight away.
The Diviners by Libba Bray-I listened to this on audio book and it was a perfect read for Halloween. The Naughty John song still haunts me. I will definitely be listening to the second book in 2016.
The Girl with All the Gifts by M.R.Carey-A post-apocalyptic YA novel set in Britain. A great twist on the zombie/alien genre.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline-Amazing. I cannot describe how much I loved this book. Brilliant storyline, interesting and rich world building, 80′s pop culture and gamer references and to top it off an audio version read by Wil Wheaton. A definite must read-even for people who aren’t fans of games, geekery or general sci-fi.
You're Never Weird on the Internet by Felicia Day-Felicia Day is one of my geek heroes. Over the last few years her presence on the internet as well as her work in general, her company Geek and Sundry and her book group, Vaginal Fantasy, have helped me embrace my geekiness and she has brought into my life some of my favourite films, TV shows and books. This is a brief look into her life and her career.
The Wicked + The Divine, by Kieron Gillen-Probably the best graphic novel series I read this year. The storyline itself is amazing and the artwork spectacular.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1) by Stieg Larsson- I’ve been very slow about jumping onto this particular bandwagon given its graphic content. Although several parts were difficult to read, I’m glad I did. Amazing book and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas-This entire series is an emotional roller-coaster. The main female character has quickly become one of fictional faves and I regularly recommend it.
Uprooted by Naomi Novak-Another Vaginal Fantasy pick. Its a retelling of Beauty and The Beast with a twist. I quickly fell in love with it and I am already anticipating a re-read.
A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell Mystery, #1) by Deanna Raybourn-Deanna Raybourns first novel Silent in the Grave was a random pick when I was out shopping one day and I haven’t looked back since. She is one of my all-time favourite authours. Through her work, I bonded with someone I used to work with and because of this we are still in contact. This new series takes us back to Victorian London but with a different heroine but one whom I quickly adored as much as Julia Grey.
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss-I picked this up because it was in the bargain bin. It sat on my shelf for well over a year. Thanks to several Booktuber recommendations, I dusted it off this summer and devoured it. It has since been passed around the office. Perfect work of fantasy.
Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi-This was another audiobook (as read by Wil Wheaton).I loved it. Amazing world building, excellent storyline and characters. Should come with a “Potential Heart Breaker” warning.
A Series of Unfortunate Event by Lemony Snicket-This is not a kids book. At least it shouldn’t be. Delicioulsy dark and twisted. Working my way through the series via audiobook, I keep expecting to hear Jude Law’s voice.
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson-One of the best parts of this year was discovering Noelle Stevenson. Nimona is a charming superhero tale with a twist.
Rat Queens series by Kurtis J. Wiebe-The Rat Queens are a punk kick butt group of awesome women who go adventuring. Absolutely loved this and can’t wait to see where this series goes.
