read in 2026 - The Diviners by Libba Bray
Rating: 4/5
“People think boundaries and borders build nations. Nonsense—words do. Beliefs, declarations, constitutions—words. Stories. Myths. Lies. Promises. History.”
The Diviners is such a slept on series. It has everything: flappers, jazz clubs, prohibition, ghosts, psychic abilities, lgbtq+ rep, disability rep, the power of friendship, and loveable characters. But the striking thing about it is how Libba Bray refuses to shy away from American history during the romanticized 1920s.
She did her research and included the really ugly things: the prevalence of the KKK, horrible treatment in asylums, the popularity of eugenics, the dangers of an interracial relationship, atrocities against Native Amerians, and how the United States were built on the harm and suffering of anyone who isn't a straight white man.
This series is the story of America, an unapologetic look at the highs and disgusting lows of our history, all wrapped up in paranormal mystery. It's a shame that it never got that popular, because this series is just begging for a gorgeous TV adaptation.
Some pictures I found yesterday of Jeff in his theater days. Truly lots of breakthroughs happening in the field of Jeffrey Combs studies recently! Many of these had to be heavily cropped and I have the sources saved, so feel free to reach out for more info :)
female chars who are tailor made to what tumblrinas say they want in female chars but do not have the deserved hype on here to reflect that: Poppy Li (Mythic Quest), Hennessy (The Dreamer Trilogy), Ling Chan (The Diviners), Liraz (Daughter of Smoke and Bone)
The women of the Diviners: Evie O’Neill, Theta Knight, Mabel Rose, and Ling Chan
