Rachel Wong. FMI1B. Grace Coddington, was a creative director at US Vogue and has worked alongside with iconic people like Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, etc. Born on the Welsh island of Anglesey in 1941, Grace started out her Career in British Vogue as a young model at the age of 18, in 1969 and then becoming a prominent model in the 60s. Over time, she joined the ranks of British Vogue as junior fashion editor. She has worked with many renowned photographers such as Barry Lategan and Arthur Elgort, eventually becoming renowned for her enthralling narrative fashion images. The documentary that has set her career path straight for her is “The September Issue”, where she played the role in styling and production, giving her the recognition to her amazing efforts in curating Vogue’s September Issue. Even after so, Coddington has never failed to prove herself over and over again as highly artistic and innovative; a prominent figure in Vogue. One of the works that I really liked was “Alice in the Wonderland” shoot from the September Issue of Vogue in 2003. The sense of mood and fantasy in the photo shoots she directed was filled with depth of meanings and beyond fascinating. The richness of a sense of fantasy, bold colours and wild patterns (pic 2&3) gives the whole image a sense of whimsical fantasy, bringing the audience along into another dimension. From the arrangement of the table (pic 1), filled with scrumptious desserts, to the dress on Alice, filled with delicate layers that made up her luxurious houte couture dress, signifying a sense of fantasy and luxury that many dreams about. Grace Coddington has never failed to come up with the sophisticated and posh look on the subject’s appearance, fitting in to the DNA of Vogue’s magazine. Unlike others, Coddington has always been focusing on the story that the photos tell and the emotions in which the characters bring out, instead of just the look of the apparels pieced together. Hence, drawing consumers into her world of fantasy and eye-catching narratives. After Coddington’s decision in leaving vogue, she became an independent Art Director, collaborating with Louis Vuitton, Comme Des Garcons, etc in creating content. Now that Coddington has shaped the fashion media in a way that it has never been before, how will content in fashion magazines be influenced by her? What is next to come for the next generation engrossed in digital media? Will we carry on such deep value of content in succeeding photos or will photos be fabricated by the apparent beauty standards in our present-day society filled with the negligence of the narrative behind the images.
