Racial Representation: The Final Frontier in Science Fiction

“Science fiction, with its unlimited imagination for what humanity can achieve, is ripe for representing the diversity of the human experience, and science-fiction filmmakers, directors, and writers should emulate Roddenberry and his commitment to telling the stories of many different kinds of people.”

This exciting to see that a showrunner like Roddenberry, who was creating a show 70s. He was likely creating Star Trek in a very different social climate, but he still found a way to used sci-fi to represent all kinds of different people while at the same time expressing how these differences bring people together.

Racial Representation (Miller)

“Unfortunately, representation of black women in television and in science fiction is still seriously lacking.”

I chose this quote because I believe it emphasizes and reinstates the many issues we are reading about and exploring. I enjoyed how this article explored the sociologist and psychologist form of these ideas. The article states that in order for us to improve our own situations, we must imagine what is possible for ourselves. Showing these representations through media is how we thrive as a society. This article also hits base on the idea of a “token character.” A token character is one who is a single character that is shown to represent an entire group. One character, defining an entire group. This idea is a bit insane to me, and something I did not realize until reading about it. Like the quote says, black women are greatly lacking within the media and television, they are often portrayed as a single token character. As science fiction is an “unlimited imagination,” it should commit to telling more stories about more kinds of people.
