The Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI @cccadi) is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a new exhibition "Jab, J’ouvert, Revelry & Resistance," which opens this Thursday, April 30.🎉

Rooted in Afro-Caribbean histories, “Jab, J’ouvert, Revelry & Resistance” explores Carnival as a living representation of resistance, identity, and collective memory.

Through layered environments that merge sound, texture, archival material, contemporary art, and interactive elements, visitors are invited to experience Carnival as a living, embodied language that moves through the body, memory, and time.

This is a clip from the second episode of our series ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’, titled “Three Things You Should Know about Arturo Schomburg”, which you can view in our YouTube.

Fun fact: 50 years ago, CCCADI founder Marta Moreno Vega discovered a letter from Arturo Schomburg asking his friend Nicolás Guillen to welcome Langston Hughes to Cuba. This was the inspiration that made Dr. Vega envision an organization exploring the vibrant cultures and points of connections of the African Diaspora across the Caribbean.

Caption reposted from @schomburgcenter #ArturoSchomburg, the #writer, #curator, and bibliophile whose collection of books, manuscripts, and artwork became the cornerstone of Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library collections, was born on this day in 1874. We're celebrating his birthday today and looking forward to the 100th anniversary of the Schomburg Center this May!

#ArturoAlfonsoSchomburg was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Inspired by Latino revolutionaries, Schomburg became an influential advocate for #PuertoRicanindependence and #Blackliberation.

After arriving in New York in 1891, he joined Los Independientes, an organization dedicated to advocating for Puerto Rican independence. Schomburg's interests shifted during the 1890s amid rising racial tension and the disbanding of the Cuban Revolutionary Party.

When he visited the South and was confronted for the first time with the inequalities of Jim Crow society, Schomburg took an interest in learning more about U.S. history. He collected and read books and manuscripts, co-founded the “Negro Society for Historical Research,” and joined the American Negro Academy.

Throughout the years, Schomburg amassed a personal collection of over 10,000 books, manuscripts, artifacts, and pamphlets. The New York Public Library purchased Schomburg's collection in 1926, forming the core of what is today known as the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
