Omega Speedmaster Alaska II project chronograph (1972) in its distinctive red-colored outer case on display in the Omega Museum in Bienne - Switzerland. Note the reflective white radial dial with Gemini capsule subdial hands and the “60 minutes” bezel as a tachymètre bezel was considered useless in space. December 1969, NASA agreed to cancel Apollo 20 in favor of the Skylab space station mission. The final three Moon landings were rescheduled but after the problematic Apollo 13 mission, the Apollo 18 & 19 were cancelled as well by September 1970… December 1972, OmegaWatches finalized the Speedmaster Alaska II project in an effort to develop the perfect space watch, based on astronauts’ input. By that time, Apollo 17 was the last mission to land humans on the Moon preventing OmegaWatches from testing the Alaska II time pieces for what these were designed for… December 1977, almost a decade after the secretive Alaska project was initiated, OmegaWatches’ ultimate Speedmaster chronograph finally made it into space… with the (Soviet-) Russians! How was this accomplished? How were the Alaska II time pieces used? How long were these space-flown? Where are these today? November 1981, former X-15 test pilot STS-2 commander Joe Engle shaves while floating in micro-gravity at the mid deck of space shuttle Columbia. The STS-2 astronauts were the first NASA astronauts to wear the Omega “radial dial” Speedmaster chronograph. This radial dial Speedmaster was developed under the Alaska III project to produce an innovative wrist watch for the space shuttle astronauts. (Photo: NASA)
