I’ve created a bumbleby playlist on Spotify!
It follows Blake and Yang’s relationship from their Beacon days to the present, Volume Seven, and I’ve included my own commentary/ramblings below as to why each song is special!
Give it a listen! 💛🖤
Radiant Warmth - This song provides a gentle opening to the playlist and gives the image of soft feelings developing between raids and festival dances at Beacon. I could imagine Volume 1-3 Blake listening to this song and letting her mind drift to Yang.
That Feeling When - This song is definitely higher in tempo than the last. I imagine it fitting right before the fall of Beacon, especially with the lyrics, “I'm about to let you in.” I was going for a “so close yet so far” feeling with this one, because honestly if Beacon hadn’t fell, I think they would’ve confessed their feelings long before now. I could see either of our girls hearing this song and imagining the other.
Yellow Lights - Another slow song! But this time, Angsty! This one is placed directly after the fall from Blake’s perspective. I wanted it to highlight the devastation in their separation, as well as Blake’s desire to be with Yang and the rest of team RWBY again, even though she had her own motives to deal with in Menagerie. I think the lyrics, “All I see are yellow lights” repeated over and over reflect this persistent longing pretty well.
Weak - More angst! (This is it, I swear!) But this time its from Yang’s side of the divide. This song honestly narrates Yang’s Volume Four experience pretty well, specifically the lyrics, “Yellow, bracing teeth, These visions haunting me. Get me out of my head, You get me out of my mind, You get me out of my dreams.” I wanted to envelop the way she felt back then, and I think this song does a really nice job of that. Maybe a little too perfectly considering it’s title, ‘Weak,’ is the exact opposite of Yang’s embodiment of strength.
Past Lives - The reunion song! I wouldn’t want to flood this playlist with angst, because we’ve had enough of that already! This song plays a bit into the idea of soulmates, but it isn’t overbearing. The lyrics, “ I never thought I'd wait so long for you, the timing is right, the stars are aligned.” illustrates this, and on a more literal note, the song begins with "Past lives, could never hold us down. Lost love, is sweeter when it’s finally found. I've got the strangest feeling, this isn't our first time around." which is my favorite part. In my mind, it kind of translates to “Well look, against all of these odds, here we are again. Funny how that works out.” This song lays the foundation for their reconciliation and I’d place it between the end of Volume Five and beginning of Six.
First Day of My Life - Jump ahead to the end of Volume Six! There’s so much symbolism that parallels the relief that was felt by both Blake and Yang after finishing off Adam. They did What They Had To Do in order to give themselves new life (and new love! yay!) The song is pretty mellow, but it holds a lot of sentimental value to me. I played it when I finally moved away from home and to university, so for me, it is the ultimate symbol of new beginnings. This is the first day of their lives, in multiple senses.
Who Do You Love - I have a lot of feelings about this one. If I had to pick one single song to fit Blake and Yang perfectly, this would be my choice! With the lyrics, "I won’t come back to you broken, I won’t stay away too long" and "from fable to fumble, from stable to stumble, nevermore" there are so many instances that fit them perfectly, as well as the upbeat and melancholic feel to the song, it really captures the excitement and uncertainty that comes with the process of revitalizing a relationship that's been so off and on. It’s the feeling of creating something unbreakable.
She's A Gun - This song is the playlist’s conclusion because of it's high tempo and exciting nature, it’s definitely a song you'd blast with the windows down and your gf in the passenger seat of your car all summer. I really think it captures the direction of Bumbleby currently. Just unbridled excitement and the feeling of being able to take on the world with the person/people you love. Everything in RWBY is a gun, so now their love is too.
