The Orlando Shooting Was An Act of Radical Islamic Terrorism, and We Should Call It That
By Lee Connelly
I’m consistently disgusted by President Obama’s response in the aftermath of mass shootings in the U.S.
If we’ve learned nothing over the past seven and a half years, we’ve learned that we can always count on our Coward in Chief to blame guns and Republicans rather than the shooter.
True to form, after Sunday’s shooting at Pulse in Orlando, Obama, along with Democrats across the nation, revived their attacks on guns, the Second Amendment, the NRA and of course Republicans before the names of the victims were even released.
If you’re a liberal, it makes sense to blame guns, the NRA and Republicans. After all, why would you blame the shooter? I mean, we all know that guns are only fired in two ways: the trigger pulls itself or the NRA works some kind of witchcraft to pull the trigger from afar.
No way the shooter is actually responsible!
Not only is Obama blaming everyone but shooter Omar Mateen, but he’s also refusing to call this shooting what it is: an act of radical Islamic terrorism.
Just 12 hours after the massacre in the Orlando club, Obama actually said, “we have no definitive assessment on the motivation” of Mateen – even though he called 911 himself and pledged allegiance to ISIS as he was mowing people down inside the club.
On Tuesday, after meeting with the National Security Council, Obama blasted presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump for saying this shooting was an act of radical Islamic terrorism.
Obama said:
"That's the key, they tell us, 'We can't beat ISIL unless we call them radical Islamist.' What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to trying to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this? The answer is none of the above," Obama said at the Treasury Department. "Calling a threat by a different name does not make it go away. This is a political distraction."
As for the "radical Islamic terrorism" label, the president said, "Not once has an adviser of mine said, 'If we use that phrase, we're going to turn this whole thing around.' It's a political talking point. It's not a strategy. And the reason I am careful about how I describe this threat has nothing to do with political correctness and everything to do with defeating extremism."
CNN has been keeping a running total of ISIS attacks since 2014 when they dubbed themselves the Islamic State. Since 2014, ISIS has “conducted or inspired at least 90 terrorist attacks in 21 countries other than Iraq and Syria, where its carnage has taken a much deadlier toll. Those attacks have killed at least 1,390 people and injured more than 2,000 others.”
Including Sunday’s shooting, there have been eight attacks in North America since 2014 that were “inspired by ISIS.” Two of those attacks happened in Canada and the remaining six were in the United States.
That count doesn’t include the shooting at the Chattanooga military recruiting offices last July. While the shooting was motivated by “foreign terrorist organization and propaganda,” it wasn’t linked to ISIS. It also doesn’t include the four Americans captured and killed by ISIS.
I don’t understand what else has to happen to force the president to finally label the group as radical Islamic terrorists. No one is asking him to condemn Muslims as a group or Islam as whole, but his ability to simply ignore the facts is astounding.
In an effort to maintain our current PC climate, every liberal will tell you even though this shooting was carried out by a radical, it doesn’t represent all Muslims, which is true. But, why does it represent all law-abiding gun owners?
Any time a member of the GOP says something stupid or outlandish, that person suddenly becomes the face of the party. How many times have you heard Obama bash Republicans and the “way we think” because Trump says something horrifically stupid?
How many times have liberals called Christians “extremists” because we don’t want to be force fed agendas and laws that force us to violate our beliefs? Or, how many times have we been lumped in with the Westboro Baptist nuts that are clearly the antithesis of Christian values?
We’ve got a president who doesn’t hesitate to openly bash Republicans and Christians, but he won’t call radical Islamic terrorists what they are because he doesn’t think it matters and Heaven forbid we speak the truth and risk hurting someone’s feelings.
New York Post opinion writer John Podhoretz brilliantly hit the nail on the head when it comes to Obama’s inability to use the words radical Islamic terrorism.
Podhoretz writes:
Here again, and horribly, we have an unmistakable indication that Obama finds it astonishingly easy to divorce himself from a reality he doesn’t like — the reality of the Islamist terror war against the United States and how it is moving to our shores in the form of lone-wolf attacks.
He called it “terror,” which it is. But using the word “terror” without a limiting and defining adjective is like a doctor calling a disease “cancer” without making note of the affected area of the body — because if he doesn’t know where the cancer is and what form it takes, he cannot attack it effectively and seek to extirpate it.
