For the ask game, what's your favourite time period to learn about? :D
I. I honestly can't tell you. I think I will end up specializing either in antiquity or medieval times, but that doesn't mean I don't love to learn about modernity! I, in fact, think it is CRUCIAL we take a look at recent history to understand the now! But I think I feel more at home and at ease in the ancient and medieval Europe and adjacent area kiddy pool. (Dashcon ballpit but it's the Althistoriker and the Altorientalisten pelting each other with plastic balls while argueing about Assyria).
But there is literally no time period I'm uninterested in. There is no part of the world I would categorically be unable to get into. I have my preferences, certainly, like Roman Republic > Roman Empire, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in the Roman Empire! Nathanael Andrade held a great talk about Zenobia's shortlived Palmyrian Empire yesterday and it was FASCINATING!!! Byzantine History and Chinese History are two things I know jack shit about but would LOVE to get more into!!! Especially Chinese History from the BCE to European Medieval times. WHAT is going on over there while we have Roman warlords or the pope. I'm Nosy. I wanna know 👀
I think the only thing I have zero interest in is military history, specifically military history in statistics or without context. Also yesterday, one of my classmates held a presentation on the Hoplites and that was actually interesting!!! Like how the helmet made problems simply because you SWEAT so fucking hard. Never considered that!!! I barely wore anything, I was very stabbable when I was in Rome in september and I already sweat my arse off! But like. Why and when legions were stationed were and the reconstruction of a battle in all detail but no context of what we can infer from that further... Idgaf about battles and military technology unless you tell me how that reflects back on the rest of society. Politics, poetry, arts, all that jazz. Literally everything. (Also why I can't get into the nitty gritty of economical history. I've never been good at economics and all the numbers and figures just start to blur in front of my eyes).
So for the ask game - Yes. Tell me about any historical period in time and I WILL listen. I've not missed a single episode from the You're Dead To Me Podcast, I'm here for anything between Ancient Mesopotamia and Paul Robeson. Bring it on.
