you see this cutie right here? that’s Rachel aka Rae aka my Raechan who I often talk about (and bully if we’re being honest). She’s over at @satanchann and @knightswatch if ya’ll want to give her a follow. You won’t be disappointed. 

She’s amazing. Not only is she a talented writer, but she’s a great person. She listens to me when I whine, she kicks my ass when I’m down on myself, and she comforts me when I’m upset. She is, quite literally, the best friend I’ve ever had.

And today we made our relationship officially queerplatonic.

We would always go on about being platonic soulmates, and how we wish we could see each other, hug each other, cuddle, etc. And we’ve made plans to get a place together in a few years after we finish school. So I decided to just ask, officially, if I could call her my queerplatonic, considering we were basically that anyway.

I can’t wait to cuddle you for real, Raechan. I’ll get to do it every day. I’m so excited. I’m so very happy to be your best friend, to be your queerplatonic, your soulmate. You mean so much to me, and I love you so much.

I hope you read this after you read the latest OMAM chapter, because maybe it’ll soothe the sting of it . . . (you’ll probably see this before tho /shrugs into a ball and rolls away)

So this is a drabble that I promised to write for Rachel (@satanchann) as a reward for being a good girl and going to her math class instead of skipping like a delinquent (don’t worry, I made her show me her notes as proof).

It’s SouTori, and this is my first time writing soutori seriously, so I hope I did it justice? idek man

There are fairy lights in the trees. That’s what tells Sousuke he’s in the right place. That, and the orchestra playing something that’s probably Mozart or Bach or one of those other famous classical composers that Sousuke can never pick out by ear. The backyard of the Nitori mansion is full of partygoers clad in slinky dresses and sharp suits. It makes him feel extremely underdressed in his old jeans and the only sweater he owns that doesn’t have any holes. He’s wearing a sports jacket on top of it though, and even Rin begrudgingly admitted he looked nice when pressed earlier for his opinion.

Although that filled Sousuke with confidence then, he’s suddenly struck with apprehension. He probably looks like some sort of vagrant stalker, lurking in the trees on the outskirts of the Nitori property, in his thrown-together wardrobe, watching the party with one hand shoved into his pocket, the other clutching a crudely wrapped present.

It isn’t difficult to pick out Ai among the people gathered. He stands beside the refreshment table, looking small beside the pyramid of champagne glasses towering precariously high. He wears a three-piece suit himself, his hair brushed neatly, swept to the side. Sousuke notices the way the black suit makes his skin look paler, and he tries not to stare at the delicate curve of his neck, or the way his slender fingers wave through the air, as he speaks with a guest.

Sousuke feels like he should probably leave, knowing he’s unwelcome by Ai’s parents at least, but Ai looked so hopeful when he invited Sousuke to his party weeks ago, and Sousuke really doesn’t want to let him down.

Thankfully, he’s spared from walking over through the mass of expensive cologne and outrageous flower displays by Ai turning his head and seeing him. He smiles, a gesture so bright and sparkly that Sousuke finds himself smiling back on reflex. He lifts his free hand out of his pocket to wave awkwardly, and Ai excuses himself to hurry over.

“You showed up!” Ai exclaims, his face still lit with happiness.

Sousuke rubs the back of his neck. “Well, yeah,” he says with a sheepish grin. “I wasn’t about to miss your birthday.”

He holds out the gift, glancing briefly at the mountain of presents piled high on a table beside the refreshments, each one wrapped in shiny, classy paper. It makes his own look like it’d been dog-chewed for a while, but that doesn’t stop Ai from taking it excitedly and ripping off the paper.

“Oh wow,” Ai breathes in wonder, staring down at the vinyl cover of Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes in his hands. He looks up at Sousuke then, eyes shining. Sousuke can see the fairy lights in the trees above them reflected in his eyes, and his heart squeezes suddenly. “Where did you find this?” Ai continues.

Sousuke shrugs. “I just saw it in a thrift shop, and I remembered you said you were trying to learn some pieces by him so . . .”

Ai looks blank for a moment before grinning. “You mean when we talked before my recital? That was months ago! I can’t believe you remembered that.”

He looks so flushed and happy that Sousuke is having a difficult time not growing flustered. Attempting to keep his heart rate under control, Sousuke bends down to place a gentle kiss against Ai’s cheek.

“Yeah, well, I have a good memory,” Sousuke offers in response, not really sure what else to say to that.

The pure adoration in Ai’s expression is difficult to ignore, so Sousuke doesn’t bother protesting when Ai grabs his shirt and tugs him down for another kiss, this one landing on his mouth. Sousuke closes his eyes and steps closer automatically. His hand rests against Ai’s hip, drawing him nearer still until his smaller body is pressed against his own. It’s a natural gesture by now, and he doesn’t think about the people at the party, simply slides his lips along Ai’s the way they always long to do. Ai responds in kind, humming quietly in contentment at the way their mouths fit together.

Sousuke isn’t sure how long they stand there, but his back is only just beginning to ache when a snap of a twig and a harsh clearing of a throat break the peace of the moment. Ai pulls away, obviously reluctant, and turns toward the interruption: a stern-faced man with silvery hair similar to Ai’s, though his is cut close to his scalp. His eyes, also alike in color to Ai’s, stare hard at Sousuke, the disapproval and irritation in his gaze nearly palpable.

“Aiichirou, you are neglecting your guests,” Nitori-san says sharply.

Ai bites his lip, glancing up at Sousuke before turning back to his father. “But Sousuke is my guest,” he says softly.

Nitori-san’s frown deepens. “I don’t believe your mother placed him on the invitation list.”

Sousuke notices the way Ai’s shoulders are trembling and instead of letting him take the fall for his appearance, he steps forward, ghosting his hand lightly across Ai’s lower back in what he hopes is a comforting gesture.

“My apologies, sir,” he says, though he doesn’t bow nor sound apologetic. He stares the man in the eye instead, every muscle within him tense for a fight. “I came on my own. I wanted to wish my boyfriend a happy birthday.”

He doesn’t miss the way Nitori-san’s features flinch at the word “boyfriend,” but he doesn’t lower his gaze. He’s not ashamed of his feelings for Ai, and he wants the man to know it. Finally, it’s Nitori-san who breaks eye contact, turning his eyes to his son.

“Your mother expects you to rejoin the party. Please do so immediately.”

“Yes, sir,” Ai says softly, turning his gaze toward the ground.

Sousuke notices the way he seems to curl inward, his shoulders raising toward his ears. The eager joy from his expression earlier has disappeared, and Sousuke bristles. Nitori-san nods, shoots one more glare toward Sousuke, before turning to leave. Sousuke turns back to Ai, reaching for him once more, but Ai steps away, out of reach, not meeting his gaze.

“I-I should go back,” he says softly.

Sousuke feels his gut clench, and he wants to argue, to insist that Ai stay with him, but he knows better than to make a scene, especially here with so many potential witnesses. So he simply nods, swallowing hard.

“Will I see you at the fort tomorrow?” he asks.

Ai bites his lip, looking back up at him with eyes full of regret. “I-I don’t know,” he says in a voice that Sousuke can tell means ‘no.’

Sousuke nods, figuring that’s to be expected. His chest aches, but he does nothing but bend to kiss Ai’s temple lightly. “Just let me know when you’re ready,” he says.

Ai nods, opens his mouth as though to speak, before closing it again in silence. Sousuke can see the way his eyes are shimmering now with tears, and he wants to reach out and wrap his arms around him, to pick him up and carry him away from this place to the fort where they both feel safe and happy. But he sticks his hands into his pockets instead and watches Ai return to the life that Sousuke can never be a part of.
