Lecture 20: One of the most acclaimed groups to emerge from the Golden Age of Hip Hop in the 1990s was the Wu-Tang Clan, the name for a collective of legendary East Coast rappers from Staten Island that includes RZA, GZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekown (a.k.a., Raekwon the Chef), Ol’ Dirty Bastard (who passed away in 2004), Inspectah Deck, Method Man, U-God, Mista Killa, and, by 1995, Cappadonna, who made his debut appearance on Raekwon’s album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…. Widely known for their obsession with Kung-Fu movies and comic books, Wu-Tang came to be known for their creative raps, brilliant production, and innovative sampling of damn near everything under the sun, from Johnny Mathis to Barbara Streisand to Isaac Hayes. This song, “Protect Ya Neck,” is off of the group’s 1993 debut Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (release date: November 9, 1993).
