Rafael Barba x Reader- (Short Story) -Chapter 2
"Do you have to pace around like that." you watched from your spot leaned on the wall, waiting for him to take a seat and relax. Barba was dealing with another tough case, and apparently it wasn't coming together as well as he hoped. "Must you stand there like a statue." he retorted. Somehow Olivia convinced him that you being there was actually beneficial.
So for the past week you were working diligently at making sure he didn't catch a bullet. He didn't make it easy though. Every order you gave he felt the need to question. When you informed him that you would be driving him to and from work, that apparently infuriated him. You contemplated knocking him unconscious just to get him into the car the first day. One thing you were sure of, Rafael Barba was a difficult man to put up with.
"I can see why someone would want to kill you. I feel sorry for your mother, if you're this bull headed as an adult, I could only imagine what you were like as a teenager."
"Is this your attempt at conversation, if so it's quite tiring." you grinned from your corner.
This was probably one of your more fun cases if you were being honest with yourself. The jobs in your career usually left you with either sleezy or just plain stupid clients. You never had a major problem. You could take care of yourself. Barba though, he challenged you. It was refreshing. His intelligence was another plus. He wasn't too bad looking either. The last thought made you frown.
"Unprofessional."
The reason this job worked so well was because there were certain lines you never crossed. For good reason to. It's not like he was the first attractive guy you had to protect. So you had no idea why the ridiculous thought kept circling in your head.
"I'm going to check the area, don't go anywhere." you inform. Barba just huffs with a nod. You needed to get some air. Clear your thoughts for a bit. Maybe if you had been more observant, you would have picked up on the look Barba sent your way as you exited the room.
You took a breath when you got into the hallway, walking down the hall. It didn't help that he lived on the top floor. You weren't really looking forward to walking down five flights of stairs. So you just settled for a window nearby, looking out at the view.
You were in the room right opposite his. Until the culprit behind his attack was caught, it was a necessary countermeasure that needed to be taken. You nodded at the delivery guy that walked passed. He smiled kindly, sending a wink and you just chuckled under your breath, eyes moving back to the many lights that graced New York City. You couldn't understand how something so beautiful can be so tainted by hate and crime.
You flinched when you heard a single gunshot, and on instinct you sprinted back to Rafael's room. The door was ajar and you pulled out your gun. Taking slow steps you inched inside. As you got there you could spot Rafael on the other side of the room. The moment he saw you his eyes widened and he yelled out.
"WATCH OUT!!" The door slammed into your arm, knocking you to the ground. You tumbled with a grunt, gun flying out of your grasp. When you looked to the side, the red and white striped shirt made you frown.
"Well hello there cutie, when I saw you in the hall I knew you were a firecracker." The supposed pizza delivery guy was smirking as he kicked your gun further, stepping over your body. He had two guns in his hand, one pointed in Rafael's direction and the other aimed at you. "See my intention here was just to take out our little ADA here. Dumbass can't seem to keep his mouth shut." he gritted his teeth, glaring in Barba's direction. You were still on the ground groaning.
"But maybe I should have a treat after all my hard work. " he kneeled down, passing the tip of his gun along your shoulder, over to your collarbone and down the middle of your chest.
"You have me, just let her walk away from this. No more people have to die!" Rafael took a step forward which just irritated your captor more. "SHUT UP! " he screamed. While he was distracted with his anger you raised both your legs, wrapping them around his neck. Clutching your thighs you squeezed, watching the way he gasped, dropping his weapons in a weak attempt to regain his breath.
You slammed his body into the ground with all the force you could muster. You could see his face begin to turn red as he fought to reach for his fallen guns. In a matter of seconds he lost consciousness. When you were positive he was out, you released, jumping to your feet and kicking both guns as far as you could. You turned to Rafael who rushed in your direction. "Are you alright?" you brushed off his concern, still breathing a bit heavily.
"I'm fine, this is what I'm trained for. Call the police Counselor. " you were a little pissed. If you hadn't been distracted you probably would have noticed the pizza guy was a fake. Rafael didn't react immediately, he was still looking your way. Reluctantly, he stepped away to get his cell phone.
Your eyes moved back to the man lying on the ground. You rubbed your arm in annoyance. "That hurt you stupid bastard. " He was lucky the lash didn't leave a bruise, you would have done far worse than just knock him out.
Rafael was back at your side with an ice pack. "The police are on their way, here put this on your head. You took a pretty bad fall." you took it gratefully, pressing it to the back of your head with a wince. It was then that you finally scanned his body.
"I heard a gunshot, how did you block it." you couldn't make out a single defensive wound on his body. "I knew the minute he stepped in he was a fraud, I never get pepperoni." The comment made you laugh, and you noticed the hole in the wall next to where he had been standing.
"You really are something else."
"Seeing as I just narrowly escaped a trained assassin I'll take that as a compliment."
