knowing rafe since middle school set the unlucky precendent of being just friends. platonic was something that was established earlier on, and felt like what we would always be.
i had accepted it now that i was in college. but its okay, because my life is more than some unrequited love.
kiara and i had a really early class on mondays, so we’d usually get breakfast with sarah after, who’d join once she woke up.
'…good morning girls! how are we feeling?' sarah smiled as she approached the booth kie and i had reserved at the local cafe.
'feeling good sarah how are you?' i replied, a smile tugging at my lips as she sat across from me.
'why do you always look so suspicious?' sarah said.
i laughed before apologising, 'i'm sorry! your presence just makes me happy.'
as we ate our food we had caught up on what we did over the weekend away from each other.
'also, did we make a decision about going to that frat party on friday?' kiara asked.
'i'm happy to go, but i don't mind if we don't.' i answered, digging into the last few bits of my pancake.
'i think we should go, we need to let lose now that the wave of assignments is over.' sarah replied.
'okay lets go! should we plan now?' kiara offered.
'might as well. i know rafes going but we will probably just meet him there. who is coming with us? i assume john b and jj?' i asked, having talked to rafe about the same party the other day.
'i'll ask john b. he'll probably come if jj comes.' sarah replied.
‘jj will definitely come.’ kiara nods.
'ok cute! we're going to have so much fun. i think rafe will bring ava though.' sarah informed us, mainly me in which i playfully roll my eyes in response.
in highschool i had a small crush on rafe that sarah and kiara were still hung up on. they swore we were soulmates. though i've stated that im over it, they claim i'm not.
i did have real feelings for him at one point though, and it was hard not to. as my bestfriend he treated me very well. and having kissed twice (circumstantially), it didn’t help my will to not like him. kissing was really intimate for me, even if it was just from seven minutes in heaven and being drunk on new years. but i wasn't going to kid myself. the kisses were circumstantial. i didn't want to live in a state of delusion or have hope just to get my feelings hurt, so i learnt to accept it and move on. but that didn't mean all those feelings just disappeared.
nowadays i didn't bother with anything romantical in association with rafe. i hadn't expressed any recent crushing on him, but sarah and kiara weren't dumb. they knew that it wasn’t a random crush and that it was true feelings.
don't get me wrong though. even if i wasn't as over rafe as i claimed to be, i'd moved on. i had other things in my life, opportunities with other men and the bestest friends any girl could ask for.
'sarah it really doesn't matter. lets go out and have a good time ok?' i replied. i received a knowing look from both the girls.
rafe and y/n have been bestfriends for years. but what happens when she has pushed her true feelings to the side, for it all to catch up to her?
AUTHORS NOTE i love when the jealousy goes both ways. there is some assault and uncomfortable touching from a random guy so beware

going to the party as a fifth wheel had begun to become something i regretted. sarah and kiara were busy with john b and jj during pres and the uber ride, so i couldn't lie and say i wasn't feeling a little alone.
i liked to see my friends have fun though so i didnt complain. i was just hoping this wouldn't translate to the actual party. i'd usually stick around rafe when i had to fifth wheel, if he hadn't had his own girl with him. but this time he did, have his own girl with him that is.
the party was typical. flashing lights, pounding music and drinking games were happening all around the predominantly open planned frat house. immediately the girls and i headed for the drinks in the kitchen as the guys trailed behind us. we indulged in some normal dancing and socialising, then settled into the couch where we people watched.
it had been a bit when rafe entered the house holding hands with ava. sarah, sitting on john b's lap to my right had also noticed his presence and gave him a big smile. he walked around the couches to get to us and greeted everyone from behind.
'good evening everyone, you know ava,' rafe said as he wrapped an arm around her waist.
'little late aren't we?' jj questioned from the love seat adjacent to us.
'better late than never.' rafe retorted, smilling wide.
i turned to look at him as i stood up. 'you guys can take my spot, im going to get another drink. do you guys want anything?'
he took a pause before replying. 'um, sure. im driving though so maybe just a coke or something.'
i nodded. 'ava?'
'yeah anything is fine,' ava said smiling.
ava's always been popular, but i didn't know her that well. we'd crossed paths and talked every now and then since we typically ran throughout the same groups, but we were never close. she was nice from what i've experienced though.
i walked towards the kitchen where a multitude of drinks covered the kitchens island. there were a variety, so i decided to make my own concoction when i felt a presence getting awkwardly close to my side. i waited a beat before turning my head and gave a pointed look to the boy standing uncomfortably close to me.
'do you need something?' i asked.
'just wondering why a pretty girl like you is here all alone.' he slurred, daringly lifting his hand to caress my lower back, and dipping it lower.
'oh? but im not alone.' i deadpanned, stepping back to subtly brush his hand off and walk to the other side of the kitchen to grab drinks for the others.
as i'm doing so, my eyes caught onto rafes across the room. i saw his eyes flicker towards the guy following me and he sent me a raised eyebrow to check in. i grimaced in response.
'really? because i dont see anyone here.' the guy continued to pester. getting bold enough to lay both of his hands on my hips when i bent down to grab some cans from the cooler. i stood up almost immediately.
'the fuck is wrong with you?' i faced him furiously and stormed off to safety with my friends who were still sat on the couches.
rafe, who had been watching the whole ordeal lightly pushed ava off his lap and walked towards me, but straight past. i sent him a questioning look. however i turned around to see that the boy was still following me, and that rafe was confronting him.
'hey dude, leave her alone.' rafe said calmly.
'mind your own business man. she wants me.' the boy has the nerve to reply.
'i don't want you creep.' i interjected.
'see? she doesn't want you.' rafe stated.
sarah came up next to me and asked, 'whats going on?'
'that weirdo was following me around all handsy and stuff.' i informed. i felt her shift uncomfortably and tell john b to come over.
'cmon babe why are you lying? i know you want a piece of this.' the guy continued to say, coming towards me with his hands out. i cringed and took a step back warily.
john b put a hand on the guys chest, 'lay off man.'
and when he attempted to take another step, rafe give him a big shove.
'get the fuck away. she doesn't want you.' rafe barked.
in the corner of my eye i swore i saw ava roll her eyes.
'don't tell me what to do. and she can speak for herself.' the boy replied.
rafe had enough and literally picked the drunk boy up, everyone having to stifle a laugh in reponse. rafe brought him outside and dropped him on the grass, me and a few others following behind.
'go. away.' rafe enunciated.
'fuck off-' rafe interrupted him with a punch to the face.
there was a collective gasp.
'the fuck is going on rafe?' max, the frat president walked out the front door towards the commotion.
'tell this little bitch to get the fuck out of the party, max. and tell him not to touch girls without their permission.' rafe told him, and stormed inside to get to the backyard.
he headed for the firepit, and sat on one of the logs whilst lighting a joint he'd kept in his pocket. i followed him and sat next to him quietly. in the corner of my eye i saw the rest of our friends check in to make sure we were okay, then head back into the house.
'here,' i gave rafe both his and avas drink. 'you didnt have to do that you know. but thankyou.'
i couldn't help but feel a little flutter when rafe stood up for me, but i made sure to push it to the side.
he put the cans on the floor and took a large inhale of the joint.
'rafe youre driving.' i contested against his smoking.
'its alright, ill get one of the guys to take my car and drive me back,' he replied. 'and dont worry about it y/n. guys like that need to be checked, and id do it again in a heartbeat. nobody touches you, okay?'
'i think you need to add 'without your permission' to that last part rafey.' i smiled at him.
he smiled back cheekily and rolled his eyes. 'sure.'
we sat around the firepit for five more minutes just talking.
'alright lets go inside.' i sighed, standing up.
'no, why? lets just stay out here a little longer.' rafe looked up at me, tugging my arm.
'rafe you need to spend some time with ava. you brought her here and its kinda bad youre not with her, and with me instead,' i expressed. 'and the drink i brought her is still with you.'
'lame excuse y/n.'
'whatever. lets go inside.'
as soon as we entered the house we were interupted by luke. he was an occasional hook up of mine who was a junior with rafe.
'hey y/n.' he greeted, nodding at rafe. rafe gave him a tight smile in return.
'hi luke whats up?' i responded.
after some small talk luke offered to get me another drink, and invited me back to his for when the party died down.
'ill have to see about heading back to yours. i came with my friends so i dont want to ditch them. lets hang out now though.' i responded. luke nods, putting a finger up to signal for me to wait while he gets me another drink.
i turn to rafe.
'go to ava. ill stick with luke so dont worry about me. i wont have to 7th wheel now.' i smiled.
'yeah.' rafe said, avoiding eye contact with me. he turned around and quickly walked back to our friends who were stood next to the makeshift dance floor.
ava had been talking to her own friends when rafe hastly interrupted them and passionately gave her a kiss. i couldn't help but feel uncomfortable, so i tore my eyes away. i told myself that it was just the alcohol that made me nauseous.
