AN ARCHED BROW MEETS ERSO'S CLIPPED TONE, though her jaw shifts with the visible effort of biting back the curl of her lips. the girl amuses vel, in some ways. she's been a rebel all her life on the lines with the partisans, but it seems she has only recently reawakened that liberation of fighting back, the hunger to do more. and with how she riles cassian, something tells her that she might like jyn very much, given the chance. being the daughter of an imperial science officer might . . . complicate things, but no one chooses what they're born into.

“ and i'm all ears, ” vel folds her arms across her chest as she leans back against the table of mostly useless scrap, widening her eyes expectantly. “ is there something you need? ”

TRISTAN KNOWS PERFECTLY WELL THAT SMOKING IS A BAD HABIT, AND FRANKLY, THAT'S EXACTLY WHY HE'D PICKED IT UP. he's known most of his life that the chances of him dying from natural causes are low on the best day, but either way, he's never really considered his health when deciding what not to do and he's not about to start now. not like it'll kill him faster when the jaws of death probably sit at the business end of a tie – or any number of the blasters in this godforsaken galaxy who want him dead. among their number might be the woman who stands not far away in his peripheral vision. even from this angle, she looks tense, though he's not sure that differs from any other day. jyn remains always on her guard, it seems, a trait he can certainly appreciate, all things considered.

he takes a slow drag as he looks out at the hanger from his perch, reclined against the length of a rail, one leg hanging over the side and swinging. buggy, his yellow-trimmed astromech, lingers close beside him, enough for him to briefly set his hand on her newly shined dome as he ashes his smoke over the side. buggy lets out a low whistle that sounds almost like a sigh – no particular binary, but a sound he certainly knows to mean : we should help. it almost makes him laugh. at least erso has nerve, he grants. it's no secret he keeps a ship of his own around that, unlike his x-wing, the rebels don't control ... and can't track. he just can't remember anybody yet having the nerve to ask him to use it. not that he'd call what she did asking.

smoke curls in the air before him as he exhales, slowly, in no hurry, appearing as relaxed as anything. his urgency is earned, after all. a beat or two more passes until, finally, he says simply, " can't. buggy says no. "

well, he's been obliged to, and he does so love to bestow kindly compliments —

he begins, blandly and neutrally: "your eyes are so incredibly bugged out, jyn. the light bounces off them like twin stars, or like those mad annoying l.e.d. lights on cars — you know the ones right? the ones that fuckin' blind ya? yeah, those — like l.e.d. lights off a guy in a hi-vis jacket before you run him over, or something. and your smile! augh! your smile! the way it just stretches over your mouth like it physically pains you to smile just gets me fucking going."

the annoying part is that she is, objectively, a smokeshow. he would rather eat his shoe that admit that while he was still in punching-distance, though.

"jyn, you terminally sexy beast, please do me the honour of glowering up at me forever, 'cause you're unlikely to grow ever again."

✦         THERE'S A SHOE ON THE CEILING FAN.  HE'S CERTAIN IT'S HIS.  if he remembered anything about how it got up there, he'd have approximately one less issue out of the fifty-five still waiting to be solved — starting with the most pertinent one the list: is that @ragedagainst buckling her belt at the foot of his bed?  

“don't flatter yourself. you were just convenient.”  

teddy's smile is slow and insolent as he sits up — the headboard, looser than he remembered it being before, groans in protest as he leans against it — he has no retort ready, nothing scathing to say that isn't already implied in the fucking mess they're surrounded by.  there's a sock on the lampshade lying on its back  ( when did that get knocked over? )  that he's positive isn't his, and he will not be informing jyn of, in hopes of watching her leave the dilapidated hotel room with only one sock on. 

“convenient my ass.  that was a hell of a fight and you know it,”  technically, that's not flattering just himself.  

teddy glances around the room again — he can't see any knives, though he knows she likely has something sharp on her person that he really should be wary of;  nor can he see any dangerous scuffs that he'd have to pay for later.  thank god for small mercies.  his whole body feels scuffed enough as it is. 

“also, that's my shirt.  its dry-clean only, so if you're going to take it, at least tell me you'll take care of it.”

✦      IT HAPPENED LIKE CLOCKWORK, EVERY TIME.  he couldn't blame it on vampiric magic — theodore did not lead the kind of life necessary to make enthralment easy, he was not the sort of prey that could be made chaste and obedient by will of another's mind, or by any kind of venom the undead could spit in his mouth — and certainly he did not think jyn would be the kind of creature to use such a paltry trick on him.  no, she was too efficient.  her instinct for the hunt and her precision with the kill made her too conspicuous a monster to waste time lulling her victims in with lasciviousness.

plainly put, if @ragedagainst wanted him dead, if she just wanted something to feed on, he'd be an insensate heap of meat and sinew at her feet already.  by some utter miracle he had remained on his feet.  

no, jyn's allure was of a more ribald nature:  she was two hands fisted tightly in teddy's hair, a gasp against his cheek, his throat, his collarbones, that promised an enthusiastic bruising sometime in the near future.  his fingers played teasingly against her jaw, willing her to open her mouth, all so he could press his tongue against her fangs.  she didn't need to breathe, and had rapidly convinced him he didn't want to be breathing either, not if it meant pulling back.  as if to taunt his human need for oxygen, or maybe in response to his thudding heartbeat — he couldn't tell, was it kindness or mockery that made her pull away? — he felt jyn's feet guiding a path into some wooden protrusion.  furniture?  a table, a dusty couch?  who knew.  the back of his knees hit the edge and then they were toppling;  it pulled a surprised gasp out of teddy.  finally, air in his lungs! and jyn piled onto his lap, across his hips. one was more exciting to his shot nerves than the other.

he said, panting hard,  “why the rush?”  despite the growing strain in his body, despite the absolute hungry need painted all over his flushed face,  “sunrise isn't for another five hours.  where do you need to be that's more fun than here?”
