As I’ve been looking into it DisneySea lore is really into “cursed statues” as a recurring motif. Raging Spirits got cursed by the gods because the excavators placed two statues facing each other. The Crystal Skull curses the tourists who come to its temple trying to take the fountain of youth. Shiriki Utundu is an idol that transforms the Hotel Hightower into the Tower of Terror.

Interestingly, given how much Harrison Hightower was poking around Lost River Delta, it’s amazing that he didn’t end up cursed by one of THOSE statues first!

Long ago, I made a post talking about the links between Lost River Delta's Raging Spirits coaster, which features these stone heads, and Tower of Terror, which features Harrison Hightower stealing one of these heads in a lobby painting, as shown above. What I did not consider at the time was the fact that the spirits of the appropriately-titled Raging Spirits are real, at least for the purposes of the ride. This fact seemed inconsequential given that Hightower meets his demise at the hands of Shiriki Utundu, an African idol. Yet, looking around at the paintings that fill the lobby, Hightower has stolen a lot of valuable objects from sacred sites with gods we also must assume are real with the information we are given. He's pissed off pretty much every major God he's run into, and the thing that ultimately gets him is a little wooden idol? I feel there's more to this turn of events than meets the eye...
