Why I'm not buying a car in the UK ...
Why I’m not buying a car in the UK …
For me, a car is not a necessity – I don’t need one to commute, nor to fetch and carry kids, nor “for independence” – so why bother? When I first arrived in the UK I was still in the “South African way-of-thinking-mode,” you know, that one of without a car, I’m stranded thinking!
I soon discovered that public transport in the UK is AWESOME as compared to South Africa. There are busses, trains,…

A new millennial railcard has sold out despite strong demand crashing the website on the first day of sales.
The National Railcards website apologised for the problems and said “we will consider carefully” the high demand when more cards are issued.
The railcard for 26 to 30-year-olds cost £30 and offers a…

Safestay Holland Park London - Part 1 of our trip
London trip part 1 - The accommodation and train travel @SafestayHP @_Railcards #travel #London We can't wait to go on our family trip to London. Kaitlin and Jack have never been before and they are so excited. We have lots planned and hope to take in as many sites as we possibly can. We are doing something different though and staying in a hostel rather than a hotel. We are staying at Safetstay Holland Park which looks really nice and has a fabulous location. Make sure you follow are travels. #travel #familytravel #hostels #hotels #railcards #familytrip #London #londonaccomodation #toursist #londontourism #safestay #kidzania #parentblogger #lifestyleblogger #travelblogger #blogger
We have been planning for the last few months to go to London. Kaitlin and Jack have never been before and they are both super excited. We are going for 2 nights and 3 days and will travel down on the train from Manchester. Myself and Neil have been several times both for work and pleasure but never really seen the sights properly. We have lots planned already but still time for more planning and…

National Railcards - Family and Friends Railcard
National Railcards - Family and Friends Railcard @_Railcards #travel #train #familytravel #London #railcards We travel to London in a few weeks and we have taken advantage of a great discount using our family and friends National Railcard. It will be Jack and Kaitlin's first time on a proper train journey and also first time in London we are all super excited. Any recommendation for things to do please do leave us a comment as we are still planning what we are doing and would welcome any suggestions.
We are going to London in a few weeks and we have spent hours doing research into travel costs. Because we have a family car we usually drive everywhere. When myself and neil go to London we always get the train but it’s affordable because it’s only one fare when you have 4 it can soon add up. This is when we discovered the family travel card from National Railcards. The family travel card allows…

Railcards
Hello happy students!
I’m hoping you’ve all done this already, but if not, I have a tip that’ll save you quite a lot of money.
It can be pretty expensive to keep and run a car while you’re at uni, and getting the train home isn’t much better a lot of the time. That’s why I recommend getting a 16-24 railcard.
You can get an application form from your nearest train station and all you need is a passport photo that they can use and a form of I.D so they can check it’s actually you. They sort the card out there and then so you don’t have to wait around and hold up the queue.
It’s £28 for one year and £65 for 3. I know that seems like a lot of money to part with at once, but it is definitely worth it. It takes a third off the price of your ticket. I only go home about 4 times a year, but that has already made paying for a railcard worthwhile. If you don’t believe me, here’s my example:
(To get home, I get the train from Lincoln to Ely)
A single ticket cost me £20.70 without a railcard
With a railcard a single ticket only costs me £13.65
- That’s £7.05 I can spend on going out when I get home or just for coffee or snacks on the train.
My four trips home have already paid for my railcard, so it’s definitely worth it.
The extra money may help over the holidays, so just keep it in mind.
Happy savings!
- Jade
