The quarter inch of rain we got may have seemed scant to the eye on the ground, but over in the rain barrels, I got at least one 47 gallon/180 liter barrel completely refilled.

As we move more and more into climate change, if you’re not catching rain to use, it’s one of those things you need to learn about.

I borrowed a taller ladder from my parents’ tool stash and got the downspout back in place.  This configuration should hold until I can get to the hardware store and get a bracket to bolt the upper piece of drain pipe to the house.

I had one of those perfect moments where all three rain barrels were dry, and I took the time to adjust all their risers.  This was my most-hoped-for part of the water upgrade project.  The barrels are stepped so that they overflow from the first to the third, and the last one needed to be just a bit more off the ground.

I had some extra cinder blocks and pavers on hand, so it was just a matter of unhooking all the connections between barrels and going down the line. And in doing all the connector hoses, I found there were two worn washers that had not been discovered before and replaced those from that same $2 pack I got weeks ago.  I have now serviced all the tech in this entire set of barrels.

It rained just a bit a day later and that caught somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of a barrel of water in that first one.  Using rain water between the beginning of May and the end of September, when city water rates are their highest, makes for significant savings.  That partial barrel is one watering of the yard at this time of year.

a few years ago this fellow had tunneled himself a spot in the moss under the rain barrel and lived there all summer long - he’d poke his head out to see what i was up to while i was hanging out in the backyard :)
