Rain World important news
Hello Rain World community, if you get notifications from the official discord, you may have been given a bit more context for the release of the watcher.
Me, and many other console players have been hurt by the decision to release the consoles version at the furthest planed update to the game. No where was it ever previously clearly mentioned that this release was only for the PC.
Now I make this post to hopefully bring attention to this revelation, and try to do something about it.
I have left a message on the publishers of Rain World's website, detailing my feelings and distraughtness over one part of the community receiving the update while the other is left in the dust. Please take the time to put your own message in too.
Hopefully, we can do something together. Reblog to spread the word, please.
Rain World Spoilers ahead !!! - Late game content, Gourmand + Artificer endings!

With that out of the way welcome to my long post! Today I’m going to talk about how I earnestly love the idea of the pregnant gourmand headcanon. This is not a new idea by any means, but I got the idea from a friend of mine who, upon seeing the ending screens, proposed the notion that Gourmand is pregnant throughout the campaign. We dismissed it fairly quickly and laughed it off, but it got me thinking…
In this post I’m going to go discuss:
Some surface level observations and opinions,
What I perceive to be the biggest hole in this headcanon,
The real meat of why I find this idea so compelling.
Without further ado, let’s dig into the simple stuff.
For one, it’s a fun twist. Gourmand as both a character and a campaign doesn’t take itself very seriously at all (barring Hunter content), and as such this fat, sturdy, little rodent secretly being a mother doesn’t feel particularly out of place. It humorously recontextualizes both the food quest and your voracious appetite. Scugs are also absurdly resilient in the face of blunt force trauma. To me, the notion that a developing scug could withstand the shenanigans of your average gameplay cycle is plausible.
Now, the biggest hole in the mother Gourmand idea is the fact that Five Pebbles doesn’t explicitly comment on it- after all, he’s quite astute to Hunter’s illness, for instance. However, I believe this can be reasonably explained away via a combination of a few factors:
It’s worth noting that there is a reasonably small time difference between the Gourmand and Hunter campaigns. So much so that Moon even mentions Hunter’s departure when Gourmand encounters her. It would be reasonable to assume then that Five Pebbles (who is recently familiarised with this rodent species) would likely not feel the need to do as vigorous of an analysis when Gourmand arrives; doubly so given that Gourmand is remarkably unremarkable when compared to the likes of Spearmaster, Artificer and Hunter. Five Pebbles is also likely quite preoccupied at this point in time. Hunter’s arrival probably gave him quite a bit of food for thought; not only regarding Moon’s status but also as a walking reminder of his own condition. Leading into my last proposal, there’s always the possibility that Five Pebbles did in fact notice Gourmand’s pregnancy and simply did not care to point it out specifically. He’s quick to point out Gourmand’s ‘rotundness’ and their indulgence in their natural urges, which while most obviously insinuating gluttony it could also quite easily encompass their other urges. The choice word ‘rotund’ is his quick and easy jab at Gourmand’s indulgence in Lust, Companionship and Gluttony. Wild beasts mate every cycle, why should he care to point that out in particular?
Now at last, we get to the good stuff.
I believe that Gourmand being an expecting mother makes for a compelling thematic foil against Artificer’s narrative. Gourmand’s campaign is the first one presented within Downpour. Some of the defining themes of Gourmand is finding meaning in the cycle. Gourmand is all about finding pleasure and fulfilment in the simplicities of life, in this case through creativity, companionship and good food. Just by being, Gourmand intrinsically opposes everything the iterators (and their creators) stand for. I believe the idea of Gourmand on their way to becoming a mother (if they aren’t already) only strengthens that core theme.
So then, who is it that you play right afterwards? Artificer is the campaign that follows Gourmand in the order Downpour suggests and it is a total departure in both tone and pace, which is by design. Artificer, both the character and story, parallels and flips the Gourmand campaign on its head. Artificer is a character that suffers because of her basal urges (and the eventual lack thereof). Given that she is a carnivore, we can conclude that she has always participated in some Violence. We can also safely conclude that she indulged in Lust and Companionship in much the same way Gourmand or any other creature might, and come motherhood Survival would be priority for both herself and her two pups. It is when her children are abruptly and violently taken away from her that she, in her grief, begins a warpath to facilitate her most carnal- and eventually only outlet. She is shackled by her wrath, pain and Violence. Along the way she even loses sight of any other urge. She has no options for Lust, She has no Companionship, reinforced by the absence of Companionship related passages Chieftain and Mother. Moon being dead leaves only Five Pebbles and the lizards- not stellar company. She feasts out of necessity to sustain herself and her arsenal. I would argue she doesn’t even have Survival. The very way the campaign is designed incentivises her to throw herself at any problem until she can kill it before it kills her.
They contrast in other ways too:
They both have the unique ability to craft. Gourmand’s crafting is flexible and creative, suited for problem solving (the problem usually being how to go about getting their next delicacy). Artificer’s crafting exists solely to make her a better killer. They both dream. Gourmand dreams playfully. Artificer has visceral nightmares about her grief and anger. They’re both enabled by Five Pebbles to continue pursuing their natural urges. Their journeys take them to opposite extremes. Gourmand returns to the far western wilderness, back to a thriving community and lush home. Artificer’s culminates in the scorching ruins above the clouds.
One last important note to mention, this isn’t the only time Downpour uses campaign placement to tell a story. Upon completing either Gourmand or Artificer, the Spearmaster and Rivulet campaigns are unlocked. These two stories similarly parallel and contrast one another, in this case using the titular characters as vessels to explore the conflict and failures of the past / the reconciliation and atonement of the future, respectively.
In conclusion.
Gourmand is the story of an expectant mother. One who finds fulfilment in the simple pleasures the cycle has to offer. Content and embracing her place in this world to its fullest and keen on teaching and nurturing others to achieve this same joy.
Artificer is the story of a former mother, endlessly mourning and lashing out at the world and its inhabitants who wronged her. A victim of a loss so profound that no matter how hard she may or may not try, she is doomed to succumb to her karmic shackles, alone.
They are two sides of the same coin. and gourmand being preggers simply completes the vision

I LOVE YOUR ART SO MUCH RAHHGG
Thank you!!!
I don't want to get anyhow vent-y or parasocial with my audience, the internet's no place for getting emotional to strangers, but for a longer while I've had the need to write something more out about how I really deeply appreciate all comments of this sort, whether in asks or in actual comments/reblogs (and it's something I feel other artists may also feel/want to hear, so. Yeah, one post for emotional vulnerability as a treat). The community here on Tumblr, especially the Rain World fandom, I think is the first that made me feel truthly fulfilled as an internet artist/content creator and it was SUCH a big surprise when at first I went into it with a mindset of "eh whatever maybe 3 people will enjoy mu dumbass headcanons and weird ships".
I think everyone who creates things has doubts once in a while, I am no exception and have the terrible tendency (that I try to overcome! Working on bettering yourself is fun and healthy) to overthink and distrust kind words about what I make. It's most likely because the places I posted art to before were all smaller circles and groups, where politeness and interest in each other's stuff was rather an unspoken rule of reciprocating investment. This is a double edged sword - it's fun to have a support system of closely-tied artists who are willing to help each other out, that's something I value a lot as well, but it is not fun when "they're invested because they like what I do" blends with "they're invested because that's the standard and they expect I get invested back even when maybe I don't want to as much" to the point one feels that everyone's just dishonest and nice to everyone out of courtesy.
Throwing art out to the game's tag on a whole new wild west of the internet (which Tumblr as a site was for me, I was only a sporadic tag scroller before lmao) is a whole another thing, I'd just drown in the sea of other people's stunning art if what I did just wouldn't sit with people. And that makes me appreaciate all the genuinely kind words I get so, so much more.
I am very sorry to use your ask as a start to a monolouge dear Anon, but it was a great occassion to say this;
If you as a viewer ever thought about something kind when seeing someone's art, please always say it out loud. There's no being too fangirly, too weird, you're not bothering a person by giving a comment, they will most definitely treasure all those thoughts and words like precious gold. And for artists - please remember that what you do is probably loved more than you hear or see. There's probably someone who shared your drawing with a friend, there's someone who looked at it for way longer than they would at other drawings, there's someone who wanted to comment but maybe forgot and just left with a like. It's a great thing to think about, really. This is semi-related to what I said before but just pretend that this motivational paragraph makes sense okay thanks
Ok sob stories over once again, thank you so much, anonymous asker
