National Cartoonists Society Showcase
National Cartoonists Society 80th Anniversary Celebration
Join some of today’s most beloved graphic novel, comic strip, and comic book creators for an afternoon of stories, drawing, laughter and inspiration as The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (BICLM) and Wexner Center for the Arts host the NCS Cartoonist Showcase, a community-wide event in collaboration with the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) and Scholastic’s Graphix imprint.

The event will take place in the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum and the Mershon Auditorium in the Wexner Center for the Arts.
From iconic characters and thrilling adventures to heartfelt stories about growing up, beloved graphic novel and comics creators have helped shape generations of readers through the power of comics.
Throughout the afternoon, bestselling and award-winning Graphix creators Jim Benton (It’s Happy Bunny®), Jamar Nicholas (Leon The Extraordinary), Dav Pilkey (Dog Man®), Maria Scrivan (Nat Enough) and Raina Telgemeier (Smile) will each take the stage for a special spotlight presentation and a live drawing experience to share the creative journey behind their work.
At the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum (BICLM), Cathy Guisewite will deliver a special talk in honor of the 50th Anniversary of her iconic comic strip, “Cathy.” Colleen Doran, bestselling cartoonist whose work includes “A Distant Soil,” “The Sandman,” “American Gods,” and more, will also give a featured presentation.
Forty cartoonists from the National Cartoonists Society will participate in signings, meet and greets and photo opportunities throughout the day in the lobbies of BICLM and Mershon, offering visitors unique opportunities to engage directly with creators. This event is held in conjunction with the National Cartoonists Society 80th Reuben Awards & Conference.

1 p.m. - Doors and museum gallery open
1 – 2 p.m. - Colleen Doran, bestselling cartoonist, will present to visitors in the Schulz Auditorium
1 – 5:00 p.m. - Experience a unique opportunity to engage directly with cartoonists from the NCS who will offer signings, meet and greets and photo opportunities.
5 – 6 p.m. - Join Cathy Guisewite for a special talk in honor of the 50th Anniversary of her iconic comic strip, “Cathy.”
Events at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum are free to all.

does anyone remember drama by raina telgemeier? i took it off my bookshelf this afternoon and remembered how much i loved reading it in middle school. for a whole year i couldn't put it down. this book has been with me for almost a decade now and to think (as of 2024/25) it's banned by the american government in our school districts is mind-blowing. drama was the first gay representation i've ever seen in any media. it's how i learned what being gay was long before i realized i was not only gay but also a guy. the gay romance came just as naturally as the straight romance did. it wasn't pushy or perverse, it was just a natural portrayal of life. today it really set in that i own a banned book. drama means more to me than i could ever express and i'm so grateful to still have it in my possession after all these years. i'd never give that up for anything. if you have a copy of drama or if you can find a pdf of it online then i highly recommend reading it.
Smile is a fun and relatable graphic novel about growing up, dealing with problems, and learning to accept yourself. The story is based on the author’s real life and follows Raina, a girl who injures her teeth and has to go through years of dental treatment. While dealing with braces, surgeries, and embarrassing moments, she also faces normal problems like friendship issues, school stress, and feeling insecure about herself. What makes this book special is that it is told with both pictures and words, which makes it easy to read and very entertaining. The drawings show emotions clearly, so readers can understand how Raina feels even without many words. Many young readers like the book because the situations feel realistic and relatable. The story shows that growing up is not always perfect, but the difficult moments help people become stronger. It also teaches that being different is okay and that confidence comes with time. Overall, Smile is an honest, funny, and encouraging book that many readers can connect with, especially students.
