Reading/writing on the grass in the sun is an unparalleled activity isn’t it. I’m finishing Rainbow Milk, the stunning debut from Paul Mendez. It’s the turn of the millennium and Jesse is abruptly cast out from his family and the Jehovah's Witness community he grew up in when they find out he’s gay. Subsequently love, fatherhood, religion, music, sex and race are jumbled up in a hot, sticky, heart-breaking, beautiful mess as he navigates sex work in London as a young black teen. The writing is at once sensual and celebratory of the male body, it’s crevices, and sweat, and hair, and also frustrated, angsty and angry at the way whiteness obliterates, takes up space, erases everything. 

The book’s honesty and directness is refreshing, perfect for a sweaty day ☀️

Library haul!

I’ve heard amazing things about Rainbow Milk and it was in the Pride Month display section (yay!). A Monster Calls is one I meant to read years ago but better late than never! And The Starless Sea I’ve heard mixed things but it sounds magical and I loved The Night Circus so I’ll give it a go.
