Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. Tag friends, including me, so I’ll see your list. Make sure you let your friends know you’ve tagged them.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling. My absolute favorite in the series. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read it. I think I love it so much not only because Sirius Black is one of my all time favorite characters, but because JK kind of let you know that shit was getting real in this universe and that as much as we love the Wizarding World it has its own injustices as well that translate into our world.
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. Honestly I grew up with this book as well as the LotR series, but it hasn’t been until recently that I’ve really come to terms with how much it impacted me when I was young. I could go on and on but I think my blog is a testament to how much I love it. I also love hearing other stories about how this book impacted others and that’s also the reason why it’s so special to me.
Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi. Helped me understand the difficulties of eating disorders, in this case anorexia, which I can look back on now as a Dietetics major and remember just how much people are impacted by this disorder. Portia is a very eloquent, honest author as well.
Zero at the Bone by Jane Seville. The first published M/M romance novel I’ve ever read, written by madlori who some of you might know if you’re in the Sherlock fandom. If you’ve read her fanfics you’ll know she’s a fantastic writer and this original novel is stunning and sexy.
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. I fell in love with the movie first before picking up the book. Despite some differences between the two the story is still enchanting and the characters lovable.
Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume. Something about this book always stuck with me which I’m sure is the magic of Judy Blume even if you don’t necessarily identify with the main character. I always wanted to meet a guy like Wolf, though, a character with a different cultural background than what I grew up with who kind of offers you a different perspective on life.
Dracula by Bram Stoker. The first classic horror book I ever read my sophomore year of high school (shortly followed after by Frankenstein) and I just ate it up. I think I was reading the Twilight series at the same time (and yes I did finish the whole series- still hate it) and remember thinking how Dracula could totally kick Edward’s sparkly ass.
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Wonderful storytelling with two deep female protagonists. Very intriguing.
Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This was the first book I read in less than 24 hours when I was in fifth grade and I remember being so proud of myself. It’s a marvelous book I would definitely pass on to my children.
Go Ask Alice by Anonymous. I was probably most definitely too young when I first picked this book up, but I would 100% point to it as the first ever “real” experience I had with how drugs, depression, and a variety of other problems truly damage people, especially young people, that my school couldn’t hold a candle to.

I was tagged by thudworm (using the same disclaimer as well since it covers everything):
The usual disclaimers apply: firstly, that these are general likes/dislikes/squicks, to which there are exceptions; secondly, that these are my personal opinions and shouldn’t be seen as me trying to influence you people unduly; and thirdly, that good writing/style is a significant factor.
Things I like:
I love a good AU. Doesn't matter if they're on Mars, as long as it's well written and has awesome world building then point me to it. Notable AUs include Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples (bilboo) and one from a while back I can't remember the name of. It was where Aule was an AI so if anyone remembers that one I'd love to read it again.
Genderswap, particularly fem!Bilbo. Again, notable ones include the stories of Amali (steampagan) and littleblackdog (pibroch).
Bilbo being motherly/like an uncle to Fili and Kili the closer he gets to Thorin. I just think all three have an adorable relationship.
Meh:
Not really into Bilbo being with Fili and Kili romantically, although my one exception is What's It Like by crocochoo (fem!Bilbo as well)
Nope:
Overbearing/Christian Grey-like characteristics in either Bilbo or Thorin. To me that just isn't their character. Even when Thorin is in his gold sickness it's obvious he's sick and that isn't his true personality. I like when relationships are equal unless the characters themselves give their consent to being treated in such a way. Also dirty bedroom talk is just...no. Maybe in a modern AU, but that's not my personal headcanon for Middle Earth.
