“Understanding Willow” (Thoughts for my benefit)
So the more I learn about Amity, the more I like her as a character. I like that there is quite a bit of depth to her, so we learn more about her as the show progresses and it isn’t all there from the get go.
I know I have made a comparison of Amity and Luz with April and Sterling from “Teenage Bounty Hunters”, but there is another comparison that strikes me here. Willow, Amity and Luz together make me think of the dynamic between Maria, Emily and Rain in the webcomic “Rain”.
Emily has a mother who puts very high expectations on her daughter, so she hangs with the perfect people, tries to have the perfect life, etc and despite this it is never good enough for her mom. In pursuit of that goal, she splits up with her girlfriend, Maria (okay, Amity and Willow aren’t together admittedly) and cutting ties. She then focuses on being a popular girl.
When she first meets Rain, she is adversarial very much like Amity is with Luz. Even trying to figure out what Rain’s “game is” and Amity has said this to Luz, “I don’t know what your game is” or at least something along those lines in “Lost in Language”.
Emily eventually softens and gets to know Rain and they get together and Emily eventually tries to mend bridges with Maria.
The dynamic has some strong parallels and I looking forward to seeing how Amity tackles this stuff, like her parents’ expectations of her.
Seeing these parallels with other LGBT works and storylines is great though and I’m honestly looking forward to more.
And few more notes. When Luz mentions they will fix Willow’s memories together, Amity blushes. When Luz hugs Amity, she once again blushes. And of course I’m going in knowing where this particular aspect will lead, in the next episode I believe but still worth noting.
