Broadway in Akron Insider Reviews: RAIN: A Tribute to The Beatles!
By Meghan Caprez, March 4th, 2014
There’s something psychedelic about na-na-ing to “Hey Jude” with 2,000 of your closest friends, and that’s exactly what happened at Rain: A Tribute To The Beatles at EJ Thomas. From “Twist and Shout” to “Revolution,” the boys of Rain had the audience on its feet, dancing and singing along to Beatles classics.
As a Millennial, I’m a few generations shy of living in the heyday of Beatlemania, but the multimedia element of Rain led me through life as a Beatles fan in the 1960s and 70s. The show included videos of screaming fans projected on panels across the stage. A few audience members even found themselves amongst these fans; the show used live footage to supplement its standard video content. I’m usually very wary of video content during shows and concerts because it distracts from the music, but the multimedia used in Rain really brought the feel of the concert to a whole new level. It was fantastic!
I was also very impressed by the costumes used throughout the show. They were very true to the clothing worn by the Beatles themselves. From their tan blazers performing at Shea Stadium to their casual bellbottoms crossing Abbey Road, the boys from Rain were able to transport the audience with their clothing, too.
Finally, the music. What can I even say about the music? If you’re looking for a show where four old guys half-heartedly muck around with Beatles classics, do NOT go see Rain. There is nothing half hearted about the show; you can feel the heart and soul in every epic electric guitar solo and haunting piano ballad.
Rain is The Beatles for the 21st century. It’s great for the band’s original fans, and it’s great for Millennials like me who need a little multimedia flash. Go see it!
