@daiyarpwk2020 Day 1: Distance/Longing

Just about 18 meters separated Eijun from the batter he was most anxious and most excited to face. This distance was nothing new. Nothing was different from any batter he had previously pitched to. And yet this one appeared to be both nearer and farther away, his presence growing far outside of the batter’s box and into the audience who couldn’t wait to witness another upset at the hands of his bat. Hardly anyone seemed to harbor similar expectations of Eijun, but it only made him want to change their minds all the more…

This took me far longer to finish than expected, but here’s a belated entry for @daiyarpwk2020 Day 6: Faith/Doubt

Just a day after we came back from the invitational, Yakushi had their match in the semifinals. I’d been looking forward to watch it in the stadium, but after spending more time in the Koshien bullpen than actually pitching, I wasn’t sure if I could have taken it to sit in the stands, watching the mound from even further away. Now we were back in Tokyo, anyway.

While we still had our own games to worry about, there wasn’t much time for me to pay attention to Yakushi’s. I managed to watch at least some of their game against Ikuei, but other than that, I only knew what Todoroki told me and what the papers wrote. In some ways, it was almost like we were back in the fall tournament. Just on a grander scale. There had even been a possibility that we’d see each other in the finals again. Well, until we lost.

I was running when their match entered the seventh inning with Yakushi leading 5 to 2. While the radio broadcast definitely wasn’t like being there and watching the game myself, I at least didn’t feel as restless as I did when I followed the first few innings on TV…

“Todoroki Raichi!”

I flinched as I heard my name roared behind me. When I turned around, I saw Seidou’s Sawamura running towards me at full speed until he caught up. I hadn’t seen him since he walked off the mound today. Why did he run after me? Was he just going to tell me again how he wouldn’t lose next time?

When he arrived, he stopped to catch his breath for a second before looking up at me. I was taken aback. His expression was so serious, and it looked like he’d been crying.

Then he spoke up.

“I am aware of my disgraceful display on the mound today, but I’m not backing down! Next time I will win, that’s or sure!”

He held out his hand and with it a piece of paper. I glanced up at him, about to ask what it was when he continued.

“My phone number. I’m not sure when we’ll have another match, but I want you to keep me updated on your improvements until then!”

“W-what?” I stuttered back.

Was he being serious?

Sorry if I’m not making much sense, but I really need to get this off my chest.

So… it was my first day working as the assistant of one of my favorite shoujo manga artists and as I made my way to her studio, I was so excited to meet her.

The entire way to work I still couldn’t believe that she’d hire me and when I arrived, it took my all to even ring the doorbell. Well, when the door finally opened, I initially thought I got the wrong address because the person in front of me was a somewhat scary looking man wearing a face mask. But he greeted me and invited me in.

Inside, I lost all my doubts that this could be the wrong place, with several drawing desks around and the walls covered with drawings of characters and places from the manga.

The man immediately went back to one of the desks and started working, so I was sure he had to be an assistant, too. But no one else was there.

“Um, is Ms Kuruma not here today?” I eventually asked.

The man quietly put down his pen and turned to me with an expression I couldn’t quite read.

“Oh, right… You’re the new one. Sorry. This might disappoint you, but, uh, Kuruma Raiko is a pen name. I’m the one behind her manga.”

@daiyarpwk2020 Day 4: Reunion

The reality of our loss still hadn’t fully set in when we walked off the field. It was the first time since we lost in the summer tournament that I had felt such a shock. And it was once again against Seidou.

Even dad didn’t have much to say after the game. After just a few words, everyone slowly got ready to leave. The meeting to discuss the game wouldn’t happen until the evening. No one was eager to talk about it at the moment, anyway.

It wasn’t exactly rare that I didn’t feel satisfied after a game ended, even ones we won. Usually I just wanted more at-bats. More of certain pitches I didn’t get to see enough of. But today the feelings of not having had enough, of not having been enough, were stronger than ever.

Lost in thought, I eventually found myself in a hallway within the player area of the stadium. I wasn’t sure when I left, or exactly how far I had gone. But the sudden quiet felt calming. I kept walking, just to see where I’d end up, and before too long, I heard voices up ahead…

I’m a day late, but here is @daiyarpwk2020 Day 3: Swap

Some games are unpredictable, their flow as fickle as the seas.

It came as a surprise to everyone when Raichi took the mound after Seidou overpowered Yakushi’s starting pitcher. Eijun watched in disbelief when neither Miyuki nor Maezono could get a clean hit off of him. His pitches looked powerful. Fast enough that Eijun couldn’t help but want to pitch himself; to prove he was the better pitcher.

After looking onto the field for just a little longer, he returned to warming up, excited about this unexpected turn of events. He’d been looking forward to another face-off with Raichi, but never had he expected it might turn into a pitching duel…

In which Raichi realises Eijun has quite the nice smile. 

But seriously, i love these two so much whether its a bromance or romance. I need more canon interactions like i need air pls. 

I can picture them getting along so well in my head. Its canon that Raichi is pretty shy off the field, and because of Sawamura’s super outgoing nature, i can see their friendship working because Eijun’s unlikely to give up just because someone’s quiet. And at first all they would talk about is baseball (common interest) and about how they admire each other’s own style of play which allows Raichi to get comfortable. Then it would branch out to other topics and soon they’re both texting about the manga Sawamura lended out lol. But rip, i have a lot of feelings about these two.
