Sanada loved his job. The kids loved him and loved coming to the daycare each day to the point where some parents struggled to get their kids to leave. 

He had a soft spot for a couple of them. One was the quietest little boy who stuttered over his words and turned a bright red each and every time he opened his mouth. Sanada had to remind himself to be patient with that one because each time the boy finished the proud and bright smile was priceless. Because the boy managed to get his words out. “Great job, Raichi.” He’d give him a smile and a little pat on the head for encouragement.

The other was the loudest and most rambunctious child Sanada had ever met, which was saying a lot. Sanada had been doing this for years now. The impulsiveness of this kid left him speechless.

“It was an accident that you sat... in the sink...” Sanada said more than asked the one time he had to help the boy change his shorts that were drenched in water. The boy nodded so fast Sanada thought his head was going to fly off his neck. “I didn’t mean it!” He stated animatedly. “I know, Eijun.” Sanada replied because the boy had seemed to distraught and confused about ending up in the sink in the first place. 

It was never a dull moment.

What he hadn’t expected was for the two boys to get along so well. Raichi often followed Sanada around the room. His hand always gripped at Sanada’s pants as he watched the other boys and girls playing together. Sanada could see he wanted to join, but whatever Sanada did to try to help, Raichi would scurry away and stay safely by his side instead.

And then one day, little Eijun noticed Raichi sitting by himself. Eijun was loud but played with everyone. He was a social butterfly. And one day he noticed that there was one boy he had never played with. The first day, Eijun watched Raichi follow Sanada around. The second day, he gave Raichi his favorite toy baseball, and shockingly never said a word.

The third day, Eijun came over and took Raichi’s hand. “Sensei!” He yelled loudly. “Can we go play?”

Raichi looked terrified. “Only if he wants to,” Sanada reminded Eijun because he had a tendency to just do something without thinking it through.

Eijun turned to Raichi with hopeful eyes. “Let’s play catch.” Oh dear god, Sanada thought of all the bruises they’d end up with. 

Unsure of himself, Raichi looked at Sanda with wide eyes. He gave the young boy a small nod and Raichi grinned at Eijun. “Ye-ah!” The two ran off and thankfully had not ended with bruises. Sanada breathed a little easier.

Little by little, the two became close friends. Eijun always came up to Sanada and Raichi, asking the latter to play. Eventually, Raichi spent less time following Sanada around and instead followed Eijun around. It was cute. Until they started getting into trouble together. Raichi was really coming out of his shell.

They took naps together and shared their toys. Eijun included Raichi in the games he played with the other kids. Raichi was smiling and even stuttering less. Sanada couldn’t have been prouder of his two favorites.

“Guys,” Sanada called to them one afternoon. All the other kids had been picked up except them. It was a cool, cloudy day in spring and Raichi was wearing short sleeves. “Why don’t you come inside and play while you wait for your parents?”

“But it’s nice out!” Eijun stated with a frown and Raichi nodded along. But Eijun was wearing appropriate clothes and Raichi wasn’t.

“If you get cold, come inside.” They both nodded. Sanada walked in but stayed near the door to watch the boys. He was debating forcing them outside but they were both smiling and talking... Eijun’s arms flailing around as he talked and Raichi laughing at whatever the other was saying.

But then Raichi shivered and hugged himself. That’s it, Sanada thought, they can play and talk inside. “It’s,” Eijun said, “you should take my jacket.” Without hesitation he took off his own coat and put it on Raichi.

Raichi pulled it tighter and thanked him. It would have been cute (It was really freaking adorable) but then Eijun started shivering a few seconds later. “These boys, I swear...” Sanada grumbled with a smile. 

He grabbed a blanket from inside and walked out to find them huddled and trying to share the jacket. “I don’t want the two of you getting sick on me,” he said as he wrapped them in the blanket. They gave him toothy grins and thanked him as they waited. Sanada gladly joined them on the steps.

I got you covered, annony. The worst part is that so many teams use black as a color that Eijun looks fine mix-matching because the color scheme doesn’t clash. Everything is spirit gear, even his underwear (from whom is a mystery). The socks are Kuramochi’s though,

Eijun had always noticed his classmate spending his free time alone, but when he finally went out of his way to work himself into Raichi's world, he couldn't figure out why it took him so long to try.

i.

He was eleven.

It wasn’t as if he was unaware; in fact, he was perfectly conscious of it. Probably more so than anyone would ever think. A new school, a new environment, a new beginning.

Everything was supposed to start off well; he would be able to speak better without the familiar judgmental stares and unkind snickers he often heard around him — at least, that was what he thought. Social skills definitely didn’t come natural to him; he was terrible at it, he knew, which made him all the more uptight and jittery whenever someone tried to initiate a conversation with him.

Only the first day of school and he was already making an impression. He sunk lower in his seat and pulled out his textbooks, quivery grin in place as the boy sauntered back to his seat, breaking into loud sniggers when he reached his friends crowding about his table a few seats away. He could feel the heavy, scorching stares that burned into his skin and adamantly resolved not to look their way.

It’s okay, Raichi.

He reached for the bat he had leaned against the wall — lucky he got the window seat — fingers tightening around the grip of the bat; the smooth, wooden material soothed his palpitating heart well — not completely, but it did its usual job — he could feel the warmth from his cheeks receding, back down his neck, and he took in a shuddering breath to try to untie the knot of nerves stuck in his chest.

Try again tomorrow.

“Okay, class, settle down — don’t frighten the new student. Is there anyone who would like to volunteer to bring Todoroki-kun around?”

Raichi resisted the urge to cower as everyone in the class swiveled their heads around before they turned back front. No one was talking, and then a snicker was heard at the corner of the classroom before a girl shushed him irritably. Raichi’s eyes darted to her for a moment: she was cute, hair reaching her shoulders, pretty features and she was —

smiling at him.

He quickly averted his gaze back to his book, feeling his cheeks burn as an embarrassed grin quirked at the edges of his mouth.

“No one?” The teacher asked, sweeping her gaze around the room.

The homeroom door slammed open.

“Sawamura Eijun, reporting for school duty! I’m sorry I’m late!” The new arrival was so deafeningly loud that Raichi’s head snapped up immediately. The boy at the door had his backpack slung around a single shoulder, bent over at his waist with a sincere bow. “I was helping an old lady cross the road and I forgot to take note of the time! I sincerely — ”

The class burst out laughing almost immediately, and even the teacher had a small smile tugging on her own lips. Raichi looked at the boy in wonder as he straightened up, cheeks red and grin wide as he held up his fingers to form a ‘V’. “Morning!” He greeted, energy rolling off him in strong, huge waves.

Raichi blinked once, twice. Wow. He’s kinda cool.

“Since you are late, Sawamura-kun, can you take the new student around the school?”

Sawamura turned his gaze over to Raichi at the teacher’s wave; unlike the others, Raichi could see the pure, innocent curiosity that swept over Sawamura’s features and it was only a few seconds before he nodded his head fervently. “Sure, of course! What’s your name? I’m Sawamura Eijun and I am going to lead my — ”

“Eijun, pipe down,” the cute girl said, tone stern but nonetheless fond. Sawamura snapped his mouth shut and looked at Raichi expectantly.

“I - I am, uh, I am T - To - Todo,” Raichi started nervously, eyes straying from Sawamura’s golden ones to his textbook, and felt the urge to bundle himself to the corner of the classroom. “Todoroki uh — ”

“Todoroki Raichi, right?!” Sawamura finished his sentence, and Raichi slowly raised his head again, the golden orbs still filled with unadulterated intrigue as they met his, flashing a toothy grin as he gave him a thumbs-up. “It’s great to meet you!”

He’s not… looking at me like…

Raichi felt the corners of his mouth lift, and he averted his gaze away. It was not till halfway through the lesson that he realized his hand was empty and his bat was leaning against the wall.

Uneasy, his fingers found the handle and wrapped themselves around it again.

“You bat, Todoroki-kun?!”

Raichi stopped mid-swing, turning back to see Sawamura (surprisingly alone) with a baseball in hand and cap turned backwards on his head. Sawamura was friendly the whole of his first week, with long historical backgrounds prepared for every part of the school compound, claiming that “it was necessary for him to gain complete understanding of how the school functions” in which Wakana — the cute girl — smacked him on the head with a disapproving scowl and assured Raichi that it absolutely wasn’t necessary.

“I - uh, yes.” Raichi shyly lifted his wooden bat.

Sawamura reached him in a few wide strides, mouth opened to a big ‘O’. “Wow, do you swing this every day?”

He turned his eyes upward, mid-way through his inspection of Raichi’s beloved wooden bat, and Raichi had to take a step back and angle his eyes away to the little specks of dirt on the ground to gather his composure. They were so earnest, so genuinely interested that it was — the pleasant rush of emotions that filled him was foreign. Raichi’s hand rubbed the nape of his neck as he felt the corners of his lips twitch, unsure if he should smile, and he nodded twice.

“That’s so cool!” Sawamura exclaimed, passing his bat back. “I play baseball too! But I pitch!” He lifted his hand and showed the dirty baseball that laid snugly in his palm, practically beaming with pride. “I’m going to lead my team to the nationals!”

“N- Nationals?” Raichi breathed, eyes wide. He didn’t know their school had such a good baseball team.

“Yes!” Sawamura affirmed with an assured nod, thumping his chest with his fist and a dignified huff. “We will do it!”

Warmth ran over Raichi’s body at the conviction Sawamura packed in his words, and there was suddenly an ache in his chest that he couldn’t understand as he fiddled with his wooden bat. “I - ”

“You can join, y’know!” Sawamura said, cheeks lifting with another big grin. “It’ll be awesome!”

“Play baseball?” asked Raichi, jaw slackened as he stared at Sawamura, not sure if he had heard him right.

“Yes! We all love baseball!” Sawamura pumped his fist to the air, and in a swift motion, slung his other arm around Raichi’s shoulder who spluttered and flinched away from the unexpected contact immediately.

Sawamura’s arm dropped back to his side awkwardly. A dead weight sunk in Raichi’s abdomen; it was churning his insides in a way he had never felt before as he averted his gaze downwards, cheeks burning.

“I’m sorry! I’m such an idiot!”

Sawamura bowed a full ninety degrees, then his hands clapped together like a prayer as he squeezed his eyes shut. “I didn’t know you don’t like skinship!”

“I - I’m,” Raichi stammered, thumb absently swiping circles over the handle of the bat as he struggled to form a coherent statement. “I’m just not - not used to it.” He faltered at the end of his sentence, but it was as if Sawamura understood, giving a firm nod, before he reached to grip his arm, tugging him forward.

“C’mon, the team’s waiting!”

The team was unlike what Raichi had imagined, not that he knew much thanks to his useless father who refused to divulge anything concerning baseball, instead remarking on Raichi’s lack of talent for batting. Not that he particularly cared, because he had his heart set on only baseball and he was going to push through and become a pro in future.

Still, the players looked like they were in a mess. They all jerked their heads left and right as if waiting for a coach to yell for them to get to the right base. Raichi shrugged and tightened his grip on the handle of his bat.

He was going to bat, and that was all it mattered.

Sawamura finally got on the mound, and the bill of his baseball cap was turned to the front, casting a dark shadow over his eyes. Raichi slid the sole of his shoe to and fro for a moment, testing the grounds, then leaned over the plate, arm relaxed as he focused on Sawamura.

Sawamura exhaled, then adjusting his grip behind his mitt, lifted his leg and swung his arm back. The ball came shooting towards him in a straight path, and laughter burst forth from his lips as he braced himself for the pitch —

He blinked when the ball swerved away from his direction and over the plate, the catcher falling back in his failed attempt to catch it.

The ball… moved.

A thrill of excitement coursed through his veins, and he felt himself trembling as he resumed his stance, grip tight around the handle. When Sawamura slammed one leg forward this time, Raichi found himself momentarily entranced by the attractive glow of his golden eyes and the smirk that pulled on one corner of Sawamura’s lips.

“Kahahaha!” Raichi stepped forward and swung fully, bat connecting to the pitch with a crack. He tilted his head backward as he watched the ball fly over the heads of the outfielders who scrambled on their feet to catch it, then dropped into the foul territory.

More. I want more.

“Foul!”  

“You are good, Todoroki-kun!” Sawamura rolled his shoulders, then: “But I won’t lose to you!”

“You look tired,” Sawamura said as he plopped down on the seat next to Raichi, towel hanging on his neck.

Raichi leaned forward on the seat and could feel his muscles aching, but the adrenaline rush from the match was far more powerful. “Not really.” Raichi managed a feeble grin at Sawamura who thumped him cheerfully on the shoulder.

“Here!” Raichi reflexively caught the item that was thrusted into his hands. He blinked as he identified a banana.

“A banana?”

Sawamura nodded enthusiastically. “Yep! I heard from my mum that bananas help to replenish energy really, really fast!”

“Sawamura! Your turn is up next!” Sawamura yelled back a quick reply and took his bat from the slots with a determined huff.

“I will bat a homerun this time!” He declared, giving one practice swing before he walked out of the dugout. Raichi blinked at his disappearing back, turning his gaze back to the yellow fruit laying in his hands.

He peeled the skin of the fruit down, one strip followed by another before he took a tentative bite. It was sweet and soft in his mouth, and he swallowed it after the first mouthful, enamored with the richness of taste. It was only a while before the banana peel was the only thing that left in his hands.

“I got struck out,” Sawamura said sullenly as he trudged back into the dugout, sliding his bat into the slot. Raichi glanced at the gloomy figure, surprised he was back so fast. “I’ll get a homerun next time!”

He angled his face back to meet Raichi’s eyes, making his heart skip a beat at that instant. “How was the banana?”

Raichi looked at Sawamura and felt his lips spread to a smile. It was steady, not trembling around the edges. “Thank you.”

Sawamura looked stunned for a moment — whatever Raichi’s expression was — and then he was in front of him with another sunny beam. “I’m glad you liked it!”

Raichi scored a homerun at his next at-bat.

"I’m scouted by Seidou,” said Sawamura out of the blue, and Raichi felt a chill run down his spine, stomach twisting into nervous knots as the ball flew past his mitt and hit the fence before it rolled away and towards him.

“Uh, wow, that’s - that’s cool.” Raichi stopped the ball behind him absently, flicking his eyes to Sawamura for a moment.

“I didn’t want to go at first.”

Raichi’s fingers fiddled with the seams of the baseball. “Why?”

Sawamura dropped down on the ground beside Raichi, crossing his legs and pulling the baseball cap off his head with a shrug. “I thought it out, y’know,” Sawamura said, spreading his arms wide like he was spreading a paper open before them both, “we’ll go to the same high school, get into the baseball team and aim for the nationals!”

Raichi smiled. It was exactly what Sawamura would say.

“But I met this catcher there,” Sawamura said, dropping his arms down. “The school. Everything’s different. It made me feel guilty because I felt like being selfish — I want to go.”

There was a pause, then softly: “Really badly.”. Raichi weighed the blank expression on Sawamura’s face.

“I don’t think you are,” Raichi murmured, eyes intent and unwavering as he met Sawamura’s.

“Is that so,” Sawamura said, giving Raichi a grateful smile. “I’m just going to tell the others and see what their reactions are.”

Raichi wondered if Sawamura knew how much they treasure him. It was definite that they would support him no matter what, because Sawamura was their hero to them — even to Raichi himself.

Sawamura bumped his shoulder against Raichi’s playfully. “What about you? Any schools you want to go for?”

“Yakushi offered me a place.”

“You are scouted, too?” Sawamura let out a pleased laughter when Raichi nodded his head, exposing his pretty sun-kissed skin glistening with sweat when he tilted his head back. “That’s awesome! Are you going?”

“I - I don’t know,” Raichi admitted, slumping his shoulders as he dropped the baseball on the ground, trapping it underneath his thigh. Then, he cleared his throat awkwardly. “I thought — maybe, we can go together.”

The wind blew past them just then, rustling the dense canopy hanging above them and shook a handful of green leaves to the ground. He directed his attention to the one that happened to fall right on his lap, tracing the vein of the leaf with a slightly unsteady finger, waiting nervously for Sawamura’s reply.

I got too carried away..

“It’d have been kinda cool, actually,” Sawamura said thoughtfully.

Raichi perked up, angling his face just in time to see the crease between Sawamura’s brows smooth over.

“But imagine us playing against each other.” Sawamura turned sideways to face Raichi. “It may be cooler!”

“Cooler?” Raichi echoed.

“See, you’ve always been a powerful batter, Todoroki,” Sawamura said, pride unfurling across his face with a bright beam, “having you behind my back was really assuring. But having you face me in a match would be thrilling.” Sawamura cocked his head to the side. “Wouldn’t it?”

Raichi imagined: the fiery, golden eyes alive with muted aggressiveness, coupled with his pitches that move erratically once they reach the plate —

The thought resonated with something deep inside him, and he clenched his fists by his sides. “Yes!” Raichi bobbed his head up and down, words tumbling out from his lips in his excitement. “It sounds really cool!”

“Right?” Sawamura grinned, raising a closed fist up. “To us facing off!”

Raichi’s lips curved, bumping their fists together. “Right!”

“Maybe I can hit a homerun there or something.”

“Maybe you will do just that,” Raichi said, indulgent smile stretching his lips.
