Raise Cain absolutely crushed a wild edition of the G3 Gotham

The race kicked off with Howgreatisnate – the undefeated shipper from Parx – face planting out of the gate, losing his jockey, then looping the whole field to lead the race. Along with the loose horse trying to wire the field (and looking very happy with himself), the speed horses absolutely flew early. The pace was HOT and when they hit the stretch the early leaders were gassed, leaving it to the deep closers to finish 1, 2 & 3. Raise Cain ended up rolling to win by 7 1/2 lengths with Slip Mahoney holding on to second over the always dependable General Banker.

This was Raise Cain’s 2nd win from 6 races. He ran 4 times at 2, breaking his maiden second out at Keeneland, then finishing 3rd and 2nd in ungraded stakes company. He started this year with a 5th place finish in a stakes at Turfway before his big Gotham win.

Raise Cain is a son of Violence and Lemon Belle. Lemon Belle is a daughter of Queenie Belle, a graded stakes winner and the dam of the brilliant millionaire Unrivaled Belle – putting Raise Cain in the same family as champion Unique Bella.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly does "raise Cain" mean and how is it used conversationally. (I've lived in ND all my life, so I'm very unfamiliar with most regionalisms from anywhere outside the midwest)

Colloquially, it’s basically the same as “raise hell.” It generally means to cause a lot of trouble for others. Sometimes it can refer to acts of violence, but usually it’s just used whenever the person is extremely angry at a situation and about to blow their lid.

Southerners use both “raise hell” and “raise Cain” although those who tend to use “raise Cain” tend to have more deeply religious ties. I don’t, but I grew up around so many people who do that it just stuck. Also I like the biblical reference (Cain became the first murderer in the bible when he killed his brother Abel).
