How would you feel if you are stuck in the midst of a natural disaster and in pain, frustration, confusion not knowing what to do or how to inform your loved ones that you’re trapped? In these times of crisis, everyone is often alerted and informed about the situation. However, what about the people that may possibly be affected? How are they going to inform their family and friends whether they are okay?
The earthquake that took place in Nepal on 25th April 2015 nearly took 9,000 lives and injured nearly 22,000 people. This earthquake occurred at 11.56 Nepal time with a massive magnitude of 7.6. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in 13 districts, including in the capital Kathmandu. The first earthquake while many people were left homeless and in despair after the first earthquake, little did they know they were about to face hundreds of aftershocks and another massive earthquake of 6.7 magnitude. It is estimated that 8 million people which is more than a quarter of the population were affected and at least 600,000 houses were completely destroyed leaving 280,000 damaged.
Although this news of an unfortunate event was spread wide across the world and everyone was aware about it within few minutes, the news is not able to identify each and every one of them who has lost their life or has been injured. Due to the unfolding of such sudden events, it is extremely difficult to keep an account on the details of every single person that is a part of the incident. Another way in which family and friends can be notified whether their loved ones are safe, should be implemented.
Crowd sourcing is used to define a connected crowd, this could either be an individual, a non-profit organisation, an institution or a company which utilises online tools and systems to solve different problems. This provides an opportunity for people on social media to take part in certain situations to help solve the problem. A platform like Facebook is known to be the largest space which has more than 2.2 billion monthly active users (Statista 2018). Facebook would be a great platform for crowdsourcing as a huge number of people use it and would be able to communicate effectively. Facebook has come up with a similar idea that helps people do a safety check to inform their family and friends that they are safe. “When an incident such as an earthquake, hurricane, mass shooting or building collapse occurs where people might be in danger, a global crisis reporting agency alerts Facebook.” (Facebook 2018). The new feature “safety check” is activated if a lot of people in the affected area are posting about an incident and those people in the area receive a notification from Facebook to mark themselves safe. People who do click on the safety check notification will be able to see whether their friends who are also in the affected are have marked themselves safe. This feature was first introduced on 15 October 2014, before the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and was used during the incident to help those who were associated with the incident.
Features like these help people identify those in trouble and help solve the problem.

My two tribes collide. The Bloodstained Men greet the Bruins fans. I had to take my bloodstain off and Bruins hat on before heading to the garden. Here’s a shot of the corner we picked to demonstrate on. The man selling Bruins stuff on the corner kept yelling “$10 Bruins Hats”. I thought all the Intactivists should by one, but only Marc did. I was so happy to see him in it. Pretty sure I saw the hat salesman get a selfie with him when he was buying it too- but I could be wrong. #i2 #raiseawarness #raiseawesomeness #bostonbruins #bostongarden #boston
World Mental Health Day is today. While I won't say we should celebrate it, we should raise awareness and remember that we can still thrive through the darkness. We can do things to slow down our thoughts and feelings that are spinning, quiet the loudness..Keep taking steps to replace the darkness with the light. #worldmentalhealthday #thrive #selflove #healyoursoul #zagfitness #takesteps #light #love #loveyourself #awareness #raiseawarness
Madison was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor last weekend. She now has to undergo chemo. I know donating isn't something that everyone can do, but a share is. If you can donate, anything helps. This isn't something a 13yr old should have to undergo.
OKAY tumblr! I have seen us do some amazing things.
This little girl, my dear sweet cousin, needs our help. Reblog this post, reblog it twice. Get it out there. The more people that see the more people that can help donate. Even if you can’t donate, reblog this, pray for her, anything at all is a little help.
The tumblr community is strong, I know we can do this! I have faith, do you?
