A subgenre of the blues I really like is the ‘woman, you done me wrong’ song. I don’t know whether all these bad things could really have happened to all these blues players. It does seem that there are an awful lot of wrongdoing women out there. I suspect there might be a few wrongdoing men too!

I was plugging into that system of imagery when I wrote, ‘I met her at the bottom of a well’. I thought that was a more interesting image than, say, ‘I met her on Bourbon Street’ or ‘I met her in a brothel in Paris’. I like to be direct but not necessarily literal.

I'd somehow missed "I Lie Around" in my first run-through of Paul's discography, but, boy, that one's very Ram, isn't it? And probably belongs in any discussion of what Ram's songs have to say about Paul's state of mind at the time, even though it wasn't released until a couple of years later.

I mean:

It seems that I have no choice in the matter Roll along wheel of fortune As you roll along I stick around Furthermore in the country I will lay my burden down

and

Too long have I been the heart of the matter All along I was only over-tired and overtaken

and

So long, bye bye, it was fun while it mattered (One can only imagine John's response to that.)

And if Ram itself has an undertone of "I don't need you anymore, I have Linda, and she's GREAT", then having Denny sing on this takes it up a notch: "now I have Linda AND new friends and bandmates, and we're having loads of fun together!!!" (see: the silly intro and outro bits).

The lyrics are a little clunky, but it's one of those cases where I can't decide if he was just stoned and too lazy to polish them up or if he's purposefully being slightly obscure. All the "furthermore"s sound like someone who's been reading a lot of legal paperwork. And I wonder if 'I lie around' is just meant literally or if it's about the fact that they were all spinning press narratives in 1970 and probably not always being incredibly truthful about them. I know Paul said later that he hated doing interviews in the early 70s because people would ask him if he was happy and he'd have to lie.

Anyway, that was a fun little song to discover, and another of Paul’s disgustingly catchy b-sides and throwaways.
