Eddie Klein

This is a character in the cafe during Paul's conversation with Paul Mescal. He appears while Paul is discussing Lost Horizon, and the tape being found by Eddie Klein.

This album is dedicated to the memory of our friend Eddie Klein (1943-2020)

I think Eddie rediscovered Lost Horizon ages ago, and Paul included it on this album to honour him. And I think Eddie was more important to Paul than I ever realised.

I feel like Eddie Klein most often gets name-checked when Paul talks about recording McCartney I, because he was the one who helped set up Paul's home studio - and then did it again when Paul was recording McCartney II. It's sad that he passed away while Paul was making McCartney III, since he played a big role in the whole trilogy's existence. The McCartney Legacy mentions that Klein had been working at EMI since 1967, and he was still working with Paul up to the late 2010s. It sounds like he was a good friend - there's more about him at the Paul McCartney Project, including a longer tribute Paul wrote on Facebook when he died.

I've heard claims that Lost Horizon dates to the 2000s, but that doesn't make sense. The story goes that Eddie Klein found the finished song when he was transferring Paul's work from cassette to DAT.

DAT was used professionally in the 1990s, which means the song pre-dated that.

Apparently 'Mountain Top' is the song that insists on getting stuck in my head. THANKS, PAUL.

Also, it'll probably get lost in the shuffle compared to some of the other songs, but there is something interesting to me about the Lost Horizon reference, given that it's a story about four British people landing in Shangri-La, where everything is perfect and time passes differently. Hard not to see that as a reference to the Beatle years, and Paul reflecting on a life after paradise where he has to reckon with the passage of time and where sounds, like music, evoke memories of the past. (Amusingly, in the movie, it's the main character's younger brother, named George, who insists on leaving utopia and breaks the spell.)

This looks to me like John's "exciting new offer" button he wore throughout the July 1967 Greece trip, which is a very similar color. You can see him wearing it on his jacket and pinned on his hat:

I couldn't find any pictures of John wearing The Love of My Life button, but in my quest for button pics I found other instances of Paul wearing the LOML button throughout 1967. Paul’s special button!!!!

Sometimes I get the sense that people on Reddit don't recognize this, so for anyone who's less familiar with 1940s American literary and film references: when John talked about his separation from Yoko as a "lost weekend", he wasn't coining a new term or trying to imply that he'd just been gone for a few days. The Lost Weekend was the title of a best-selling novel and Oscar-winning movie from 1945 about a writer struggling with alcoholism. That would have been easily recognizable pop culture shorthand in the 70s for someone going on a bender or describing a period of drinking too much.

Interesting side note that one may or may not consider relevant: in the novel, the main character (like the author) is either bisexual or a closeted gay man who wrestles with his sexuality and self-medicates partly as a way of coping with that. That was omitted from the movie, but the author, Charles R. Jackson, actually lived at the Dakota in the 50s/60s, and I wonder to what extent John was familiar with him and his work.

Out of curiosity, I started reading the book (via Internet Archive), and there's a part where the main character - a creative type living in New York and battling addiction - recalls getting off together with his best friend as a boy. He asks the friend who he was thinking of, and when he says a girl's name, the main character (Don) thinks, yeah, I probably shouldn't tell him I was thinking about his dad. I had to laugh; it IS very John-Lennon-core, down to the character's swings between extreme confidence and self-loathing and his frequent mentions of a 'foolish psychiatrist' who previously failed to help him.

too lazy to do a bunch of research on this rn so if anyone else is feeling froggy feel free but. this is talking about the ringo television special from '78. it's like the Only mention I've seen of something like this, all 4 beatles meeting up in the late 70s. also very intriguing because I'm not sure when exactly this movie started production but this could've been later than '76 which is definitely Weird. and of course it's just one dude saying this and could be made up or a wrong recollection but. interesting, anyway

Has anybody else here ever posted about the similarities between Great Day from Flaming Pie and the transition between Ram On (Reprise) and Big Barn Bed... specifically "who's that coming 'round that corner, who's that coming 'round that bend" - it's almost an identical melody!!

And even just as an individual song in general it sounds like it could've fit in perfectly on Ram... the chords, the fingerpicking, the overall vibes, Linda's backing vocals, etc... anyways, just one of ten things today that has me going !!!!! wait a second !!!!!!!!!
