10.) Do you like classical music? If so, who are your fav. composers? Oh, yes. The first composer to come to mind is Mozart, which is probably a bit cliche, but eh. Also, Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” is one of my favorite pieces.
15.) 10 overrated artists and bands from your fav. genresThis might sound pretentious, but I don’t like the term “overrated.” I think it’s often rooted in a lack of context for why an artist is so highly regarded, because that’s usually the people it’s thrown at (Elvis, Beatles, Dylan, etc.). Also, for me, it’s another example of people not wanting to recognize that differences in personal taste aren’t necessarily markers of objective quality. Like, I don’t like Bono’s voice, I find it grating, but that’s just my personal taste and not a mark against U2’s songs themselves. I hope this makes sense. I don’t have as much of a problem with the term “underrated,” but can see how that could easily slip into differences in taste as well.
All that said, while I acknowledge her importance and influence, I really wish people wouldn’t act like Madonna is the end-all be-all of female singers. There are plenty of women who outshine her in terms of singing, musicianship, writing, and dancing and deserve acknowledgement as well. Yet people so often act like only one women is allowed to exist in a sea of dudes. It’s absurd.

Best show experience and worst show experienceI already answered this here, but another great show experience I’ve had was my second Franz gig at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn in late 2008. My friend Ariel and I were like a yard away from the stage, which was a far cry from the first Franz gig where we were in the boonies of the Tweeter Center. The really awesome thing (aside from the show itself) was that I’d won the tickets from the Franz fanclub, which was so bizarre to me. It still doesn’t compute.
Jason Mraz was another so-so experience. This was just as he was turning boring, but that wasn’t the problem. Problem was, I’d completely underestimated how early most people would be to the show and we were just stuck in the far back of the venue. Add that to the fact that this show took place literally days after the Franz Brooklyn gig and unfair as it may be, it was all very underwhelming.

4. Do you agree with Neil Young that “it’s better to burn out than to fade away”? Not really. I lean more toward what John Lennon said, "It's better to fade away like an old soldier than to burn out. I don't appreciate worship of dead Sid Vicious or of dead James Dean or of dead John Wayne. It's the same thing. Making Sid Vicious a hero, Jim Morrison -- it's garbage to me. I worship the people who survive. Gloria Swanson, Greta Garbo. They're saying John Wayne conquered cancer -- he whipped it like a man. You know, I'm sorry that he died and all that -- I'm sorry for his family -- but he didn't whip cancer. It whipped him. I don't want Sean worshiping John Wayne or Sid Vicious. What do they teach you? Nothing. Death. Sid Vicious died for what? So that we might rock? I mean, it's garbage, you know. If Neil Young admires that sentiment so much, why doesn't he do it? 7. Best vacation spot? The only vacation-vacation I've ever been on was to Hersey Park. I'm more of a random road trip to a friend's house sort of person, haha. The idea of a typical vacation is more draining than refreshing to me.
8. Why do fools fall in love? I see this question and all I can think of is an episode of The Golden Girls where Rose asks, "Why do people die, Dorothy?" And she says, "Oh, Rose, please, I don't even know 'why fools fall in love.'"

It's late, I don't know where half my questions came from. Just go with it.
Back when I was in middle school, I had a music teacher who we all called Mr. Rick and he was Beatle obsessed. One day he played us "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine" back to back and asked us what their similarities were as a leading question to talk about the plagiarizing controversy that connects the songs. However, the reason I remember it is because one of my friends responded with something to the effect of, "They use phrases we don't use?" Then Mr. Rick kind of snapped, "I could go anywhere and hear a girl say 'he's so fine.'"
Looking at it now in black and white, it seems rather egotistical, but I'm pretty certain that wasn't the intent. It was frustration. Just because you don't know or use a phrase that doesn't mean that's how it is for everyone. At the time, I certainly didn't get how she could say that as I'd heard plenty of women and men use the term. But I clearly had a different frame of reference than she did then.
I bring it up, because a similar situation happened on Twitter earlier tonight over the phrase "dark horse." As far as I can gather, the logic is that because George Harrison used it as an album title and name of his record label that totally means that Katy Perry somehow got it from him and I guess is riding his coattails or something. Despite the fact that it's a common (Hindi and racing) term and said album is about forty years old and has probably never reached Katy Perry's ears. I said that it's a common phrase only to be hit with, "he popularized it in music" and "I barely ever hear anyone say it, but whatever you say."
Yeah. Look. I have no problem with this person presumably only knowing of the phrase through George. Tangential learning and all that, nothing wrong with it. I just... I don't even know how to phrase it. The best I can say is that I hate the presumptuousness of it, because your personal frame of reference doesn't apply to everyone. Plus, it initially struck me as yet another stupid thing for the classic rock fandom to say to prove it's better because new pop music is totes teh ~~devil~~. And, ugh, I hate that lousy, snobbish attitude so much. I have absolutely no use for Katy Perry musically, but I'm not going to rake the girl over the coals for ~~daring~~ to use a phrase that George Harrison happened to also use and likely swiped from Hinduism. That's just stupid.

1. Why do you think Franz have never recorded a song in a really thick Scottish accent? Because not everyone can be the Proclaimers.
2. What was the last thing Franz did that made you laugh? Hm. Probably that gifset of Nick and Paul with Nick smacking the back of his head and throwing balls.
3. What was the last thing Franz did that annoyed/frustrated you? I'm frustrated that there still isn't really good audio of them performing at Beck's Song Reader, but that's not really their fault.
4. Do I have the evil eye? You? Nah. Given my understanding of the evil eye, I doubt anyone has cursed you or that such a thing is even possible.
5. The swanky bassline of NYG or the defiant guitar riff of LI? Gah! Why would you do this to me? Haha. Um, at this moment, probably "Love Illumination"'s riff.
6. How long do you think Alex goes before he needs to drink Nick’s blood to retain his youth? I reckon Alex has been periodically feeding on Bob's blood since the third time he turned 29.

9. Would Bob give a good testimony for the heinous act? Sure. He has a sweet face, so he could probably get away with any sort of action or lie and people would believe him. (And now I'm getting flashbacks to Spice World again, haha.)
10. Would you like to hear Fade Together live, if so do you think it would work? It's not high on my live wishlist, I'll be honest, but it would be cool to see them give it a shot. Though, of course, if it's not something they're feeling I would prefer them to not do it. I mean... one of my favorite artists is this guy Patrick Wolf and his sort of policy when it comes to making his setlists is that he won't sing something that no longer resonates with him or that he isn't somehow feeling in that moment. As a result, songs leave his setlist for years or never come back at all. I guess it's to keep the performance emotionally honest or something like that. Anyway, I guess my point is that, for me, "Fade Together" is quite raw emotionally (like "Katherine Kiss Me") and like I said, if they're not feeling it then I don't want them to risk possibly ruining it. That probably makes zero sense, but that's what I got.
11. Are you seeing Franz this year, if not where would you like to see em? As of right now, no, but that could always change. I always have my eye out for them, but I kinda hope they don't come near me anytime soon. There's a gig I really, really want to go to this summer and I missed both of the acts last year when I dropped everything for Franz, so I don't want to run into that conflict again. For the second part of your question, I've always wanted to see them in a really small venue, like when they did that secret gig in a basement when they were in California for Coachella in 2012, I think. I don't really have a specific venue or city in mind though.
I don't know what to write for questions, so I'm not going to do any at the moment. But if inspiration strikes, I will post some and tag people.
After sleeping and thinking on it throughout the day, I think I might be onto why last night's Franzdom conversation rubbed me the wrong way. There is the aspect of feeling like my space was invaded, yes, but I think part of it is also a difference in perspective in how art and fandom should be taken in. That is, whether one should be passive or active.
Perhaps I'm projecting, but it seems like the don't fangirl (or don't fangirl "too much") perspective is one of passivity. Just sit, take the song/film/book in, enjoy, and then leave it at that. I say that because I get the sense that my question of "What’s the point of being in a fandom if you’re not going to gush, over-analyze, or make things?" was misunderstood. (Though, obviously, some of that lies on the way I chose to phrase the question.) There are plenty of things I'm a fan of, but don't interact in any substantial or meaningful way with said things' overarching fandom communities. There's nothing inherently wrong with that passivity. It's okay to sit on the sidelines and, depending on the fandom in question, that might be preferable.
I guess a better way to have phrased my question might be, can you really have fandom without the gushing, in depth analysis, fan-made creations, etc.? Does one exist? Art is generally solitary and often self-indulgent, but it needs an audience to mean anything and to live on. Fandom, by and large, is about interaction, community. It's a conversation. Now, is every person in or associated with a fandom required to engage in that conversation in any sort of way? Or in the exact same way all the time, across the board? Certainly not and that's okay.
The thing is, though, that passivity doesn't keep a fandom (and, really, art itself) alive. You need people actively engaging in that conversation in some way for a fandom and a work to endure. Without active and new participants, you risk stagnation or maybe even complete disappearance. Do you think Disney would be making a new trilogy of Star Wars movies if people weren't still engaging in conversation about it decades later? Bands like the Beatles gain new fans decades after disbanding, because of others sharing them and those new fans push the conversation forward, whether old elitist jerks like it or not.
Sometimes the conversation is petty bitching. Sometimes it's in depth, academic analysis. Sometimes it's no more than "tee-hee, this song sounds like it might be about blowjobs." It's serious and silly and sometimes annoying, but if it goes completely quiet, what then?
Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass after spending most of the day with a fever, so take this for whatever it's worth.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I guess I’d say starting V&B, but I haven’t done much of anything with it yet.

I don’t know if I’ve quite internalized it yet, but for months now I’ve frequently thought of something my seminar professor told me about not hiding my light. I don’t want to do that anymore and I’m slowly trying to undo the thinking that makes me do that.
40. How would you sum up 2013? It… was a year?
I used to think the song "She Hangs Out" was a guy trying to get in the pants of his guy friend's sister. Then it dawned on me, what guy teaches his sister to dance? Most probably wouldn't. It's most likely directed at a chick. In which case, is she a friend or is he thinking about bouncing between sisters?
This is the kind of thing that comes to my mind when I'm up playing Tetris and listening to the Monkees when I really should be doing something constructive or sleeping. In my defense, this is kind of stuff my degree is training me to do anyway (sort of... maybe), so it's not that bad. >_>
It's been quite awhile since I did a mini-bio type entry and since some new people have started following me recently, I figured I might as well do a new one.
- My name is Shannon and I geek-out like it's my job. Like Sheldon Cooper, but without all the physics and far more vinyl than comic books. Not that my collection of either is all that impressive at the moment.
- I have my A.A. in English and am working toward my B.A. in the same. The few parts of my life that don't involve the internet, sleep, and self-imposed homework have basically been eaten by my schoolwork.
- I'm currently on a big Monkees kick, which was unfortunately prompted by the passing of dear Davy. I have an unsinkable crush on Mike Nesmith. Given what I've posted lately, those things probably go without saying, lol.
- I've also been slowly working my way through the Vlogbrothers' collections of videos. John Green has quickly become one of my favorite people.
- I like to cook. One day I will have a superhero-themed kitchen.
- The main tv I really get a chance to watch is the Food Network. Everything else is too big of a commitment right now. However, I'm still a fan of Doctor Who, Home Movies, The Big Bang Theory (though recent developments make me angry), The Golden Girls, I Love Lucy, RuPaul's Drag Race (but I'm behind on the current season), Daria, Dawson's Creek (don't judge me), and Degrassi (what did I say about judging me?).
- My favorite writers are JRR Tolkien, Chuck Palahniuk, and Oscar Wilde. Joseph Campbell should be required reading and I wish I could punch T.S. Eliot in the face.
- I hate Twilight, but think if the worst/only thing you can think to say about it is something along the lines of "Vampires don't sparkle" then you've completely missed the point and most likely hate it just because a lot of other people do. There's plenty there to hate/dislike/criticize. How shiny the characters are at certain points is not one of those things.
- I basically live on the internet. I'm on Tumblr frequently throughout the day, but a lot of my posting is done via the queue. There are a metric fuck-ton of things in my likes and drafts that I need to get through, so the queue is my best friend.
- I curse like a sailor and have a low tolerance for bull. I'm an anxiety cat and socially awkward penguin.
- I have a guinea pig and four dogs. I post a lot of kittens and bunnies, because I will never be able to own one in reality. Damnable allergies.
- I post a lot of Alex Kapranos for similar reasons.
- When my muse and time allow, I write fanfiction. We don't discuss the specifics here.
- Remus Lupin is my literary soulmate. Joel Barish is my cinematic soulmate.
- My musical top 5 are The Beatles, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Fiona Apple, and Patrick Wolf. My Last.fm can give you an even better idea of what I dig. I'm always up for recommendations, though my time for new stuff is quite limited at the moment as I said.
- I have a blog project to work through Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time. Unfortunately, school has put that on hold for a while. It will be started again soon, along with a blog about more recent releases. That was supposed to be a project for the end of last year, but that didn't work out well. The great irony in all this is that I'm working to be a music journalist, so I should probably be concentrating a lot of energy and time into the blogs. But, school. Sigh. :-/
- I also have a Wonder Woman blog that began as a project for school. I hope that one day I will be able to update it. However, it is a very involved, complicated, and detailed thing, so if it does happen it won't be for quite a while.
- I run Franz Fridays with Miss Jamie. It puts my massive collection of Franz photos to good use. lol.
- If I'd actually put forth effort back in high school I'd probably be a mad scientist by now.
