One day, I will coherently write out all the thoughts I have about how Dustin Henderson’s abandonment issues stemming from his father’s absence flipped on their head after Eddie died, but for now, I’ll settle for sharing this:

That resignation Dustin always felt, showed, and easily accepted towards his place in people’s lives stemmed from his father leaving. He learned early on not to think of himself as being as important to others as they were to him in order to avoid the pain that came from being abandoned. Dustin was always able to make new friends whenever he felt on the outside of his friend group. However, Eddie dying put a stop to that pattern/habit/trauma response immediately and caused Dustin to act in a completely different way than before. Why? Because he was forced to realize that the people you love can leave you in a far more permanently and damaging way than the way his dad did. And that caused him to make his pain everybody else’s pain by pushing them away or being mean to them (or worse) because he thought being alone would save him from ever feeling this heartbreak again.

Now, is any of this an excuse or justification for Dustin’s behavior in season five? No! Absolutely not. Is it an explanation and me showing that Dustin wasn’t just being an asshole for the sake of it? Yes! Absolutely so.
