What's the issue with advertising as antibiotic free? :o Curious
Okay, I will be completely honest with this. I have not done as much research as I probably should on this. It may not be as bad as I fear, but having majored in animal science (the study basically of raising farm animals) and having listened to many professors, advertisements of this nature make me VERY worried and alarmed.
“Antibiotic free” “raised without antibiotics” means exactly that. NO antibiotics. NOTHING
Chickens in particular must be raised en masse to make a profit. Hundreds of chickens are in close quarters with each other, and this is a perfect way for disease to spread rapidly through the flock. Particularly if the farm or company does not have stringent hygiene procedures. In dirty conditions, disease spreads much faster.
Now to be fair, antibiotic free doesn’t mean vaccine free and maybe the chickens are given vaccines. But if a chicken gets sick (possible even with vaccines), they don’t get any antibiotics to treat this sickness. And this means it could make other animals sick quickly too. So then there’s this entire flock of sick animals not receiving treatment that they need.
If the place is good, they may treat the flock with other medicines, which is possible. But then you also run into the risk of a place that won’t do that, that keeps filthy conditions. So then without antibiotics, ALL these chickens are getting sick, disease is everywhere, they basically suffer and die.
Of course, it’s not profitable for any company to have flocks of chickens dying all the time. So you’d hope the hygiene is very strict and that they use other medicines. But at the same time, maybe some farms do and some don’t. It’s hard to really know. There’s many farms and many places raising these animals for a company, and they may not be enforcing cleanliness well if at all.
Besides, any meat you eat doesn’t have antibiotics in it already. All animals must go through a period of time without antibiotics to flush it from the body before they can be prepped for consumption. If an animal received an antibiotic within this time frame, their meat can’t be sold for consumption (and thus there’s no point in killing them at that time too)
So I am concerned about “antibiotic free” meat because it means there’s a very real possibility that these animals are raised in poor conditions with other sick animals, who aren’t treated at all, who are allowed to suffer and die just for the label of “antibiotic free” and THAT’S what scares me. Especially when there’s no need. There’s already regulations in place to keep antibiotics out of humans when they eat meat. It’s unnecessary and makes more pointless suffering of the animals
