We're friends, are we not?
This just in: Ramza horrified that Delita knows the faces of people (*politically significant figures Ramza SHOULD know)

Ramza doesn't look up when Delita's bookbag hits the floor next to the sofa.
"What's up with you?" Delita demands, and the tone makes something within Ramza curl up. "You were weird at school all day and Tietra told me that you've ignored Alma. You never ignore Alma."
Ramza wets his lips. "We had a career advisor come in today."
Ramza doesn't need to see Delita's face to know that it's the blank mask Delita employs whenever he's processing stuff. "And? We had that the other day too."
"It..."
The words don't seem to come.
"It...?" Delita prompts and he almost sounds gentle. Delita's been doing a good job with that, learning to have his tone more accurately reflect his emotional state.
"It made me realise that it doesn't matter what I want to do," he ends up getting out. "I'm a Beoulve, which means that I'll major in economics and minor in something respectable. Then I'll go into accounting or whatever my brothers need and I'll keep living at home and my money will run back into the estate. It doesn't matter what I want. Not like with you."
Delita sighs, an angry sigh. "Only you would think that living on a silk cushion for the rest of your days would be a burden. You don't know how good you have it, Ramza."
"What?" Ramza looks up. Delita's face is something ugly, a storming expression on his face which reveals to Ramza that he's messed up.
"I'm only here," Delita says, every word cold and sharp as the icicles hanging outside the window, "because your darling brothers are too scared of upsetting you by getting rid of me and Tietra. It's their grace that allows me any manner of comfort. And it can be ripped out from underneath me whenever they decide that entertaining us lowborns is no longer funny. They have a legal obligation to feed us and clothe us until we're eighteen, and then, like that, we'll be out on the streets."
"That's not true!" Ramza shoots back. "They like you! They've always said so!"
"You don't notice how they act when you're not around," Delita says. "They treat us as amusement at best, an inconvenience at worst. It doesn't matter what you do, you're safe. They can't harm you without losing face. But us? It's only a matter of time."
Ramza doesn't know what to say.
"Going to college just like that and getting a degree in economics to ensure your cushion is no price to pay," Delita spits. "Your path is decided and comfortable, whereas Tietra and I have to pray we pick the right path so we don't say on the roadside. Be glad you don't have a choice!"
The words sting.
"Delita..." he says, voice feeling stuck in his chest. "You don't mean that."
Delita snatches his bag from the floor. "Your privilege is a gift, Ramza," he says, voice too even, too calm, almost too convincing. "It's time you accept it."
The door slams shut behind Delita as Ramza stares after him.

Though our methods be different, our goals are not. As long as they remain so, you are no enemy of mine.
