What exactly does Flake mean that Richard is the only rockstar in the group because I'm pretty sure that Till is a rockstar too.
Well, I can only speculate, but this is the entire quote from Heute hat die Welt Geburtstag:
“One of our gitarrists wasn’t that interested in magazines and instead always took a big guitar on board the stewardesses fought with when trying to accommodate it. They came to the conclusion that there had to be a famous guitarist on board. They were right even. Richard is the only real Rockstar amongst us. Those long coats he prowls in through the streets only suit him.”
What I think he means here in his typical Flake way is more down to personality. And then you have to consider what even a Rockstar is. I think from a popularity and the whole girls and jets around the planet thing point of view one could even argue Till is the bigger Rockstar even. They’re selling out stadiums in under an hour, technically they all are. But it used to be more than that, I think.
I am romanticizing this so take with a huge grain of salt, because it’s something I personally fell in love with years ago when it comes to this kind of music, and that I think is sadly a bit dead, (you could argue through letting fans get too close for the mystery to stand like he says), they same way guitar music as a whole is a bit “dead” (and that’s an entirely different sort of conversation). Being a “Rockstar” I think was always about this extremely individualistic stance of a person going on stage, and showing a side of themselves most people would be afraid of showing or even discovering about themselves, and it creates a certain charisma that is very difficult to put in words and impossible to have if you’re not that way as a person naturally. You can’t fake it, if that makes sense. And I don’t think Rammstein as a whole have this that much. I mean Till writes poetry, that on it’s own might do that, but then he wraps it in spectacle, almost like he’s covering it back up. Or it’s in a book and you can’t even see him. Not that they don’t have charisma, but it’s different, it’s the whole unit/impenetrable force thing more than the, for lack of better word, temptation of a beautiful devil. If you look at Mick Jagger singing Sympathy for the Devil, which for me and I think for many classic Rock fans is the definition of a Rockstar, it’s exactly that, it’s look I am deplorable, I’m not even playing it, but you can’t look away and you can’t help finding it beautiful, so beautiful that you start thinking it’s not that bad after all. We infact got so used to seeing it that I think sometimes that same thing almost looks cringy today, because it is so open and honest in a way. That tension is something I think “Rockstars” have always played with. Don’t forget that we are talking about a concept that I think Flake would relate to in a way of 40 years ago, when alot more was still offensive. Till’s charsima isn’t like that, it’s in a way less sneaky and slippery if that makes sense. It doesn’t mean it’s less intense, it’s just a different colour, do you understand what I mean?
I feel a bit self important because I have used this exact sentence in a fanfic to describe it, but it’s all about snorting glitter and then the glitter makes your eyes water and smudges your mascara and it’s a beautiful, painful, mess. When I think of stereotypical Rockstars I think of Mötley Crüe and Guns N Roses and AC/DC and the Rollings Stones, oh and Lemmy! and it’s always like these guys are seeking out these extreme lifestyles in order to have a story to tell and to sing about again, like they are perpetuating their own story that way,and Richard has admitted that he sometimes seeks out pain or creates problems in order to be creative, and I think in a way it’s that. I do think Till does that too in a way, but I also buy that he would be happy growing apples all year. Richard needs to dance on the edge of a knife to be content.
I think people don’t see it in him necessarily, because we connect that sort of charisma with a certain elegance he doesn’t have a lot of the time, I mean he is also an unfortunate dumbass and a nerd, which is adorable. But the thing is, he’s also this, and Till just ... isn’t.
Plus, as a bonus, there is always this:
