It came out of nowhere.
Her shields were down and her biotics – too worked out from the fight – refused to hold her barrier up. It imploded when it was broken through, hitting he Hunter that slashed its claw right through the middle with the full force of its explosion.
At least she could say she took the fucker down with her.
It didn’t hurt. Not as much as she imagined it would, or as much as dying in deep space did. Perhaps her body was still in shock from the attack to process the pain. Perhaps the pain was too great for her brain to process.
Whatever it was, she was grateful. She was grateful she didn’t have to suffer in agony as the blood left her body from the gushing wound, or as her heart, in naiveté and ignorance pumped the blood harder, faster. Or as his arm caught her body from crashing onto the rocky ground.
”Nora, no, no, no, no, no. Please, god no. Not like this, not ag—“
His voice cracked and her heart clenched in pain. She found it funny she still took time to care when her own life seeped from her bones.
Did she tell him she loved him? She can’t remember.
A groan escaped her as her lips formed the ‘lo’ shape and he shushed her, cradling her body closer to his chest. His shaky hand brushed the loose hairs from her face. She turned her unfocused, blurry vision to him and she wished she could see him better.
She didn’t have long, she felt it. She mustered her strength, the fighting sirit that never left her body, and turned her head into his palm, placing a bloody, weak kiss into his palm. She heard him choke and she felt him shake.
She wished she could take the pain away.
I’m sorry.
She closed her eyes and she heard him shouting, pleading her to stay with him, to not go, Please Nora, you can’t do this.
I love you.
It was selfish, but she took comfort in not dying alone.
