I’ve been looking for the right artist for a while to craft a specific tattoo, a combination of my pig self, my unicorn/pegasus identity, and the powerful lyrics from “Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist” by Pat the Bunny (Pat Schneeweis) and his project Ramshackle Glory. Having lyrics, quotes, or media tattooed though can be a risk. Harry Potter fans with ink adorning their skin may have a different relationship with the author’s transphobic rhetoric, doubly true for trans tattooed fans. So, I take to conversations and the internet to look. I know folks who say swastikas came first in varieties of Tibetan and indigenous North American art, but if someone has that image on their body that is not what come to mind. I’ve been reading a wonderful essay by Charles Alan Martin from 2016 called “The Retirement of a Derelict Hero” about Pat’s retirement from music and turning from his punk and anarchist politics. It is a romantic look at the authors relationship with Pat’s music woven in with a biography of the artist and their discography. A quote about the singer’s recovery from addiction to heroin and alcohol though is standing out to me: “It’s as if, by watching someone’s process of healing, we started to fall in love with the disease, rather than the cure.” https://www.theodysseyonline.com/the-retirement-of-derelict-hero The question settles into my heart as if to ask “where have you fallen in love with your diseases, rather than the cures?” My breath leaves my chest in a sharp exhale, a blow to my being. I don’t yet know the answer, but it seemed like I should pass on the quote to those of you who might want to ask the same about yourselves, your friends, your loved ones, your heroes, and more. The stories of wounds are powerful, but what about stories of healing and health that don’t hold the same drama or trauma?
