Yes, go for it! There are gatekeepers in every fandom, but most of the MCU fandom doesn't expect everyone who saw the Avengers in theaters to go empty the comic store afterwards. And the rest have pretty much had to get used to it because the movies have become such a sensation. It's a great fandom with truly wonderful art and speculations and headcanons, so what are you waiting for? :)

Thank you so much, this is so reassuring. I’m super geeked about it, and this makes me feel a lot better about entering a new fandom.

chapter one

Marjorie had blood on her dress.

She hadn’t wanted to, of course - but really there had been such a lack of alternatives at the time that it seemed the only thing to do. Timothy stood some few yards from her, panting. His hair was all slicked back tonight. She liked it best like that. He sniffed, pushed a straying strand back from his forehead. “Jeez, Marjorie.” She nodded. “Yeah.” “I mean- Jesus.” “I know.” He looked up at her. His eyes glittered. Marjorie felt suddenly self aware, exposed, and bit her lip to cover it up. She could feel her cheeks were warm and pink and wished she’d had the forethought earlier to wear less rouge. Timothy was still staring at her, breath ragged. Like an animal, he seemed, all tooth and claw. Even in his suit, she thought. She cleared her throat a little. There didn’t seem to be much to say. Teddy certainly wouldn’t have anything to say anymore. All sprawled on the floor there between them, he looked a bit like a biblical painting or something. Timmy still hadn’t moved. It was cold now - there was a little breeze skittering through the surrounding trees, blowing up dead leaves to rattle in the air around their black forefathers. Marjorie let a breath out through her lips, making a popping sound. Her stomach was warm; she absently pressed a hand against it and it came away all red. Couldn’t even tell in the dark, she thought. Might’ve been punch or anything. Timmy had seen. He reached out over the space between them, grabbed her by the wrist, twisted ’til her palm was face up and just stared. After a minute he let his hand slide down, tangled their fingers together. She looked at him and he looked back into her blue eyes and she wriggled her hand in his; sticky, it was. “Marjorie, baby.” She had a reply all ready, simpler than anything - “Timmy, darling” - but suddenly she was too breathless, couldn’t hardly breathe any air at all, and Timmy stepped over Teddy’s body and crushed his mouth against hers before she could even think of blinking. With one hand still he held onto hers, fingers skyward and palm to palm like some strange prayer. She could feel the other like a vice round the back of her neck, holding her to him. He broke away, breathing hard and fast - like he’d taken all her air too, thought Marjorie - and grinned. A strand of hair had fallen back over his forehead. “I can taste him.” “Yeah.” Marjorie nodded. Like a flash he pressed their mouths together again, searching the curves of Marjorie’s lips with his tongue. They must’ve got Teddy in a lung, or something. She’d tasted it almost straight away. The trees were shaking around them, vibrating like violin strings in the wind. It’s going to rain, she thought. Timothy, her sweet Timmy pulled away properly this time. Their hands peeled apart, like when your fingers get sticky from too many pineapple cubes or raspberry bullseyes. “We gotta go.” He grabbed the knife where it had fallen, dangled it between thumb and forefinger. “Oh boy, Timmy.” “Yeah?” He looked at her. There was a curious, feverish gleam in his eyes now. Marjorie realised she almost hadn’t moved this whole time, how funny. There was blood on the front of her frock, her pretty frock, and now it was on Timmy’s shirt, too. “Here.” He was skittish; when she moved she felt perfectly fine. Her fingers skimmed smoothly up his suit jacket, fastening the buttons over the red stain. He watched her hands move. “What about you?” “I don’t know - wait -”. Her shawl, must’ve fallen in the dirt before. She picked it up now and shook it off, spun it over her shoulders and let it fall down her front. “How’s that?” Timmy smiled, tweaked it to the left a bit. “Good.” They propped Teddy up between them then, slung one arm over Timmy and one arm over her. She buttoned up his jacket just like Timmy’s, and if it wasn’t for his eyes you’d never have known. She slid them shut. Timmy licked his thumb and wiped away spots drying on Teddy’s chin. It really was all too easy. They stumbled a little on the way out of the trees, tripping on the uneven ground in the dark. As they moved from tree to tree the midnight light receded, and at the edge of the lawn came watery blue, punctuated by skeletal black gas lamps jutting into the night. The grass was damp, dewy, and in the distance the lights from the big house glimmered amber. Marjorie could see them all silhouetted in the windows, and when the wind dropped she could hear the band, the laughter, the chink of glass on glass. Her heels kept getting stuck on the lawn, and she could hear Timmy cursing on Teddy’s other side. Getting him down the drive was easier. It was all new gravel. At the end, where the black iron gates curled shut, that’s where Timmy’s car was waiting. “Timmy.” “Yes?” “Talk about a dead weight.” They both stifled snickers as they closed the remaining distance between them and Timmy’s little red Buick. “Timmy!” Striding up towards them - Bradley. Overcoat still on, brow furrowed, an unlit cigarette hanging from his lips. “What the devil are you doing out here? Hi there, Marjorie.” “Hi.” “Is that Teddy?” “Yeah -” Timothy laughed, took a step back from Bradley. Marjorie tottered back with him. “Would you believe, not gone eleven and the old boy’s drunk himself silly.” “You don’t say.” “Quite embarrassing. Poor fellow - doubtless he’ll be red faced tomorrow.” “Yes…” Bradley drew the word out like a father who, reading the paper, had found himself in the middle of some decision he didn’t care to make. He lit his cigarette, tucked silver lighter into a pocket. “You taking him home, then?” “Yeah - been to too many of these parties anyhow”. Marjorie chipped in. “Much the same, in the end, one or another.” Bradley chuckled. “Well, that’s true. No doubt Teddy’ll thank you for it. Don’t imagine he’d much like to wake up in Patty’s pool tomorrow morning.” “Quite right.” “I’ve just got here myself.” “Fashionably late.” “Or just damned lazy.” The trio laughed again. Teddy’s corpse hung awkwardly in between them. “Well, I should get inside. You sure you don’t need a hand?” “No - thanks a bunch - probably Teddy’d prefer it without everyone getting involved.” Bradley nodded slowly, tapped his nose. “Our little secret then. You be sure and drive safe - roads’ll be slippy soon.” It had started to rain. Marjorie couldn’t quite feel it yet, only hear it pattering on the silky leaves overhead. “Will do, pal. You have a stellar evening.” Bradley was already walking away up the drive, towards the amber lights and away from the autumnal gloom. The pair glanced at each other, and struck out again towards the car, then - “Say, Timothy?” Bradley had stopped. He was quite silhouetted now, all in black. In the darkness, somewhere between the brim of his hat and the collar of his coat, the end of his cigarette glowed orange. “Yes?” Marjorie was quite cold now, decidedly, there was a chill setting into her bones and actually now between Teddy’s jacket buttons she could see the blood quite clearly. Timmy had seen it too. “You going to Weaver’s this Tuesday?” It was Timmy who breathed the sigh of relief but connected as they were, it was Teddy that she felt it through. “Should be - that all?” “Would you tell Weaver I’ve got something - measles, the flu - I don’t much fancy it.” “Course I will.” “Good man, Timothy.” “Night, Bradley.” “Night Timothy. Marjorie.” “Goodnight.” After that, getting Teddy in the backseat was a dream. Timmy fussed over the upholstery something dreadful so they took Teddy’s jacket off and propped him up on that; he wouldn’t be using it any more anyhow. Timmy slid into the driver’s seat and Marjorie frowned a little at her reflection in the wing mirror. Dratted rain - her curls would be undone in the hour, she just knew they would. The rouge hadn’t been a mistake though, which she was glad of. Now she’d calmed down she’d have looked almost dead without it. The roads were slippy, and they sped through the midnight countryside as fast and slick as anything. Rain dripped onto the roof from the black leaves, and between the branches Marjorie watched the silver moon flicker in and out of sight. At the turning to Teddy’s, Timmy slowed the car. It was much the same as Patty’s place; a little lane led off the big road, and connected it with iron gate and sweeping driveway. “Come on.” They half carried, half dragged Teddy up the lane, and then Timmy stopped and so Marjorie stopped too, and they let him fall. The lane was flanked by rain ditches; smart, thought Marjorie. The Astlethwaite’s would’ve been rained in otherwise. Timmy threw Teddy’s jacket down after him. He’d fallen back, and his upturned face was already wet, great big drops of rain like pennies marking his silent countenance. Above him, great and heavy clouds obscured the stars. All there was was black night, and the sound of dripping trees. The blood that had pooled on his stomach had started to dry but it was coming back to life now, blossoming across his dress shirt like a peony. Marjorie sniffed. She could feel water running off her nose. “My hair is going to be ruined.”
