Usually i give up and find a different word to use, i think they work both ways though :/
They probably do, given that spell check accepts both of them. I usually pick one or the other with words I use often but sometimes I just end up confusing myself

you should know then, that I yelped while my mum was slamming the door because I wasn't looking as I replaced the cactus and stabbed myself. And then my mum and I argued about who would throw the dead spider outside. Eventually she did it by flinging it out of the sliding door rail with a piece of cardboard
