((Tenma and Kinako being Tenma and Kinako.))
So, idek where the idea of a 5-year contract came, but we applied some basic google-fu to Syco, M!M and X-factor acts and these are some pretty random results:
Leona Lewis: won X-Factor in 2006, signed with Syco + M!M. She dropped M!M in February 2013 and stayed with Syco. NB: Syco dropped M!M in September 2012. How long her initial contract lasted is unknown. [x]
Rhydian: X-Factor 2007, came in 2nd. Signed by Simon Cowell with Syco + M!M. He dropped Syco and signed with Conehead Records in May 2010 and dropped M!M as well. 3 years [x]
Alexandra Burke: winner of X-Factor 2008. Signed with Syco and M!M. Left Syco for RCA in February 2012 and dropped M!M 4 months later in June 2012. 3,5 years. [x]
Ruth Lorenzo: X-Factor 2008, came in 5th. She signed with Virgin/EMI and M!M. In August she dropped from both music lable and M!M, since her project in 2010 was crowdfunded. 1.5 years at best. [x]
Joe McEldarry: winner of X-Factor 2009. He was dropped by Syco in May 2011 and immediately broke up with M!M, so 2 years. [x]
Rebecca Ferguson: runner-up of X-Factor 2010. Signed with Syco and M!M. "In legal papers filed in London, a lawyer for the company said Ferguson initially signed a five-year management contract "on or about 15 October 2010". Ian Mill QC contends she then sought to terminate the relationship in June 2012, citing an email from the singer as proof." [x] This is literally the only instance of a five-year contract IF THAT, idek, there are only a couple of printed articles re: her contract and they did settle with M!M pretty quickly. She is still signed with Syco. Funny thing though: Syco dropped M!M just about a week after M!M "filed a High Court writ asking for a declaration that the star unlawfully ended her contract and seeking 20% of her future earnings" (c) wikipedia.
JLS: the only act to finish a 5-year recording contract (not with Syco, they were Louis Walsh's act). They were runners-up to Rebecca Ferguson, signed to Epic Records and M!M. Still remain with both companies to this day. They are splitting though after finishing their arena tour of UK this year.
Diana Vickers: X-Factor 2008, came in 2nd. Signed with RCA Records and M!M in January 2009. Dropped the label in July 2011, stated mutual separation, but remains with M!M until this moment.
The only clients signed both to Syco and M!M at the moment besides One Direction are Olly Murs and Little Mix. He was a runner-up of X-Factor 2009 and it's been 4 years, BUT: his initial contract with Syco was presumably renewed in summer 2011, so, I suppose, he did re-sign both with Syco and M!M, but idek for how long. Little Mix signed in 2011 and who the fuck knows for how long too. So far the only thing we can see is this:
Syco and M!M worked in tandem, picked up and dropped the acts together, and the record contract must come first, so the length of management contract would be tailored accordingly, which is only logical
the length of the contracts was either different for all acts or there's a clause which allows Syco to drop the act wherever they want if the results are unsatisfying. Pretty sure there must be, but I don't know shit about this, so
I can´t get enough...
