A Journey of My Own
Note: This is supposed to be a story set in the Walking Dead universe, and what I personally would do to survive. I’m going to post it and see how it goes, and if it does okay, I’ll make more. I’m 11 in this. I’m also a guy. I’ll be changing names that are personal to me.
I woke up to screams, screams everywhere. The loudest were coming down the hall, where my parents slept. I grab a knife, a combat knife, on my desk and run. I open the door to see their room, blood was strewn about and a body on top of my mother’s body. Not knowing who it was, I run up and stab them. I pull out the knife as they look at me. My father. His skin was pale and his eyes dead, fresh blood around his mouth. On pure instinct, I stab the thing through the eye. The body falls over to the other side of the bed. Panic takes me as I grab my mother’s wrist, checking for a pulse. Nothing. She was gone. Already figuring that scrambling the brain was the only effective thing to do, I stabbed her before she ended up like my father. I run into my brother’s room, wanting to see if he had fallen to the same thing our parents had, only to see him wide awake and crying. He sees me and hugs me. I hug back for a minute before I look at him.
“Matt, we have to go. Obviously whatever killed Mom and Dad is widespread, we need to gather our weapons and go. I have the keys to both cars. I want you to go downstairs and grab as much ammo as you can, I’ll grab the guns and knives or melee weapons I can find. Got it? Take your shotgun with you, fully load it. You see anyone you don’t know downstairs you don’t hesitate to blow their brains out.”
Matt rushes downstairs to the basement. He takes his shotgun, 12 gauge, and checks the basement, only to find our cat, Buzz, alive and well. Matt then goes into the storage room. Taking the duffel bag he has, he stuffs as many boxes of ammo as he can and he runs back upstairs.
Meanwhile
I had run back into my room, grabbed my katana, and secured it to my back. I run into my parent’s room, grab a bolt-action rifle and shoot open the safe. The door swings open and I collect all the guns and ammunition from there. Then I grab the rest from the room and pack it all in a duffel bag. Putting it at the top of the stairs, I run into my room, grabbing any pocket knives I can find and the baseball bat. I shove it all into the duffel and bring it downstairs. Matt meeting me in the dining room.
Matt looked at me, terrified, and said, “We need to gather food and the cooking supplies we have into a container. One of those big plastic boxes we have.”
I looked back at him and calmly told him, “Go downstairs and get the cooking supplies, Let me gather anything that won’t go bad any time soon on the island. I want you to bring all the cat food upstairs and get Buzz in a cat carrier. Grab his harness too.” Matt split off to go get the cooking supplies and Buzz. I basically unloaded the pantry as I sorted between stuff that would stay good for a bit and stuff that wouldn’t. Things such as dinner boxes, canned meat, peanut butter, canned and dried beans, canned soup, canned chili, spaghetti sauce, and powdered milk. After I sorted, Matt came upstairs with all the cooking supplies and helped load the food in with the cooking supplies. I walk over to our recycle bin and grab empty water bottles to fill, slowly filling them and storing them away. We go into the garage and grab saws, hammers, nails, and shovels to use as weapons and for tools. Packing those with the guns and melee weapons, we take everything to the front and sit down to eat the things that could go bad soon, enjoying them for the last time.
Matt looked at me and asked, nonchalantly, “Where do we want to go? I was thinking of going west, to our grandparents.”
I looked back at him, swallowed my food, and said sternly, “No. We are going to Washington, and If that doesn’t work, then we find a boat.”
Matt replied, “What if D.C isn’t what you think it is? Then what?”
I reply, raising my voice slightly, “Then we join up with others, survive best we can.”
Matt just looks at me and shakes his head, “Alright, we’ll do it your way.”
We finish our meal. Walking over to the front door. We grab our backpacks, filled with clothes. Matt straps a machete to his back and shoves the baseball bat into his backpack and gets ready. I throw a couple of transformers into my pack and sling it on my shoulder opposite of my katana, and ready myself.
We look at each other as I ask, “You ready for hell?”

They’ll believe it because they've seen it too.
It’s so fun to have lunch with random people that for some reason found themselves to be in the same place at the same time. That time when a farmer asked if you have read Siddartha from Herman Hesse, and even if his interpretation of the book is completely different from that of yours, you still feel this weird feeling in your stomach, that life – contains as many miracles as they have been repeatedly trying to convince you – is at least – fun. Full of fun, full of strange incidents, full of little quirks that make you laugh.
On a very beautiful Saturday like today, this is just what I need. On a day when the sun is shining and people are good, smiling and welcoming each other, this is just what I need to be reminded of. And you don’t need to have your brain stimulated all the time to be able to see – that’s the trick. You just need to clear your head, and look at things without trying to extract any meaning or significance out of it.
