A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to work with a handicapped man from Portugal who had been written off by those who thought they knew him well enough to believe he was incapable of producing a screenplay for a zombie movie. As I got to know him better, I encouraged him to write something more personal, like his family. The first words out of his mouth were "Oh yeah, my mother's mad." I asked him if he'd be interested in writing something about a mother/son relationship, and maybe including other family members like his sister and father, and the idea appealed to him. He said he hadn't given it that much thought before cos he assumed everyone would find his life boring. About two weeks later, I received an email from him with "the first instalment" of his script. It was three sentences long. I wrote back and told him to keep going, to write more. A week later he sent back two more sentences... and this was the way we worked for 18 months. He kept sending sentences quoting his mother or himself and his sister and father, week after week. It was mostly dialogue, or monologue, but the language was vivid. You could picture the scene perfectly. Eighteen months and a hundred and fifty emails later, we sat together and assembled all the pieces in to one, short, absolutely fantastic screenplay that will be produced at SIFA early next year.
