Until Your Love Broke Through
Until Your Love Broke Through
Neil Diamond wrote the song "I'm a Believer" in 1966 for The Monkees to perform. Ten years later, Keith Green, Randy Stonehill, and Todd Fishkind wrote "(Until) Your Love Broke Through" for Marcia Hines. Both songs have been recorded by a number of other bands and artists since then. What's notable is that the two songs are basically the same. They speak of finding love as "waking" upon a sudden meeting with the beloved and describe a complete change of perspective because of it, from despair to joy. The language they use is familiar to American evangelicals as religious, but not necessarily explicitly religious without context. Despite all their textual similarities, they were written to convey very different experiences--meeting God versus meeting a love-interest. One might say, the difference between agape and eros.
The songs' similarities showcase a long tradition of evanglicals using romantic language to describe a relationship with God. While this comparison is not without history or validity, the literal interpretation of a romance with God does lead to a number of logical conclusions that call this narrative into question. How does one have a romance with an all-powerful being who is described as "relentlessly pursuing" and where this romance is necessary for avoidance of Hell? It's believed also that romantic relationships between humans are to model this romance with God, which leads to a model of "complementarian" relationships based on explicitly codifying power imbalances within couples.
